ABB's new FBP(FieldBusPlug) concept is designed to bring simplicity and flexibility to fieldbus applications by allowing devices to be quickly connected to any bus for a 'plug and produce' solution. Instead of having to offer multiple variants to suit a large number of industrial fieldbuses, such as Profibus DP, DeviceNet, AS-i and so on, ABB is now able to offer control equipment such as its new FBP motor controllers and starters in one standard version, with a neutral fieldbus-independent interface. All the installer has to do is attach the appropriate ready-made bus-specific FBP connection cable to suit their fieldbus. |

A replacement scheme for variable speed drives has been introduced by ABB, in cooperation with its HVAC partners. The scheme aims to ensure a seamless upgrade for older drives in HVAC installations. 'The reliability of drives gradually declines once they get to between 15 and 20 years of age,' Mike Carman, sales manager, HVAC, at ABB, explains the initiative. 'To avoid costly downtime towards the end of the product's life, our plan identifies the older drives, gives advice on the installation issues and recommends a drive replacement programme. As drive losses are typically reduced by some 10% with a modern drive, the replacement and retrofit installation often pays for itself with the increased energy savings.' |

Hydrogen purity analysers from ABB Limited have been supplied to Innogy's 2000MW Didcot 'A' Power Station to help maximise generator efficiency.
The four AnalyzeIT Hydrogen Purity Monitors will be used to measure the concentration of hydrogen used to cool the generators during operation. Approximately seven times more thermally conductive than air, hydrogen is perfect for removing excessive heat, making it an ideal coolant for generator applications in the power industry. It is also considerably less dense than air, which helps to optimise generator performance by reducing windage losses caused by drag. |

The IRB 6600 is flexible and has been designed to accommodate production changes with an extremely simple modular concept. The upper arm extenders and selection of wrist modules allow easy customisation, while the working range is greatly extended by its ability to bend fully backwards. The 'bend-over-backwards' capability means that space, a precious resource, is not wasted. Further benefits are that cycles times are speeded-up and as there's no need to rotate around axis 1, the arm simply swings backwards thereby making the cell more compact and less costly. In addition, the working range and capacity of the robot is easily extended affording the freedom to make future changes in production. |
