The conventional, relatively inexpensive, nylons which are used under the bonnet for large covers soon meet their thermal tolerance limits. That is why DaimlerChrysler chose an efficient and cost-effective solution for its new three-litre 6-cylinder diesel motors: a heat-shield of DuPont Zytel HTN high-performance nylon to protect the multi-functional beauty-cover made of glass- and mineral-reinforced nylon from local overheating. Woco Industrietechnik GmbH, of Bad Soden-Salmünster, a Tier-1 supplier, developed these parts and supplies them to DaimlerChrysler.

Engineering polymers for aesthetic and functional challenges in the automotive industry

The more applications engineering polymers capture in the automotive sector in both interior and exterior applications, the more knowledge system suppliers to this industry acquire and the more ambitious the aims they set themselves in new developments and improvement of existing products. To achieve these aims, system suppliers now collaborate with raw material suppliers such as DuPont at a very early stage. They identify trends in good time so that application development teams can respond rapidly to new challenges with specially tailored materials. Examples of such advanced special grades include electro-magnetic shielding or very easy-flowing Zytel polyamides, abrasion-resistant Delrin polyacetals, electroplatable and dimensionally stable thermoplastic polyesters such as Crastin PBT and Rynite PET, vibration-damping, heat-resistant polyamides and Vespel parts and shapes that enable virtually wear-free shaft bearings to be produced, despite high forces and peripheral speeds.

Dragsters get 50,000 volt power boost with aid of DuPont Rynite PET

A powerful ignition coil made with DuPont Rynite PET thermoplastic polyester resin is providing the high-voltage spark for some of America's fastest drag racers. The MSD Pro Mag coil from MSD Ignition puts out up to 50,000 volts as it helps nitro-fueled dragsters rocket up to 330 mph from a standing start on a quarter-mile strip. Other uses for the new coil include competitive tractor pullers and racing boats. The coil's test performance shows even greater capability. In limit testing, coils made with Rynite put out up to 65,000 volts in an open circuit with no arcing or other problems, according design engineers at MSD Ignition. As part of its quality control procedures, MSD tests every coil to 50,000 volts for 15 minutes before shipping.

DuPont offers new filaments to help boost toothbrush sales

Two recent additions to the palette of DuPont Tynex filaments give toothbrush manufacturers more ways to tailor brush performance to consumer preferences and perception. New Tynex filaments with DuPont Teflon brand fluoropolymer glide easily into hard-to-reach areas between teeth. Tiny particles of Teflon PTFE, one of the slipperiest materials known, are integrated into the nylon filament's physical structure. In toothbrush testing conducted by a leading dental research center Tynex with Teflon delivered a 9 percent increase in interproximal access efficacy compared with standard round filaments.
