FLUENT 6.2 provides better understanding of equipment performance in the power industry

Fluent Inc., the world leader in computational fluid dynamics software and services, recently announced the release of the latest version of its flagship CFD software, FLUENT 6.2. This release has over 300 new capabilities that aim to broaden the range of possible CFD applications in all industries. For combustion and pollution prediction, FLUENT 6.2 builds on a wealth of existing capabilities, helping in both current and emerging power generation applications to address regulatory concerns for NOx, SOx, mercury, and particulate emissions. A new stiff chemistry algorithm enables efficient modeling of laminar finite rate chemistry. A series of improvements to the NOx models allow for emissions to be more accurately predicted. Overall usability for solving complicated reaction mechanisms is also enhanced by a new ability to create custom material databases to be used in future simulations, storing both material proprieties and reaction mechanisms. FLUENT 6.3 Beta release shows CFD performance enhancements with new Intel C++ Compiler 9.0 for Linux

Fluent Inc., the world leader in computational fluid dynamics software and services, today announces that the recently released beta version of its flagship flow simulation software, FLUENT 6.3, includes significant performance improvements on the Linux operating system, stemming from the adoption of Intel C++ Compiler 9.0 for Linux. Using the Intel C++ Compiler, FLUENT 6.3 beta has been compared to nine typical CFD examples and shows performance improvements ranging from a few percent up to as much as 50%. The compiler has been applied mainly to the Intel Xeon processor, but, it is also showing significant performance gains with the Intel Itanium processor. Sauber Petronas' new Supercomputer uses Fluent's CFD Software

POLYFLOW 3.10 extends fluid structure interaction, optimization and advanced adaptive meshing capabilities

POLYFLOW 3.10 adds to the tried and proven strengths of the POLYFLOW CFD code in extrusion. Fluid structure interaction can result in excessive stresses that could degrade some solid parts of an extrusion die. In addition, any deformation of a die lip usually affects the shape of the die's extrudate, especially for a flat die. POLYFLOW 3.10 can now calculate the thermo-mechanical stress and deformations induced by generalized Newtonian or viscoelastic flows on a neighboring solid region. The new Graphical User Interface has a Windows look and feel making it easier to use. As part of the new interface, a navigation tree format helps users easily identify their location in the problem set-up.

Fluent Inc. announced today the general availability of its flagship Computational Fluid Dynamics software, FLUENT V6.1.22, for the Intel Itanium 2 processor family running under the Linux operating system. GAMBIT 2.1 has a semi-automatic cleanup tool for repairing and preparing a CFD geometry for high quality meshing. Holes, overlapping faces, small features, sharp corners, etc. are quickly identified and various tools are directly accessible in the code to resolve this range of problems. GAMBIT's automated tetrahedral, hexahedral and hybrid meshing functions have been enhanced in V2.1 with a new HexCore capability. HexCore combines the flexibility and automation of tetrahedral meshing with the efficiency of Cartesian meshing, resulting in higher quality meshes and reduced cell count.

FLUENT 6.1 introduces automated moving and deforming domain modeling to the Aerospace Industry

This version of FLUENT brings new possibilities for modeling store separation, valve opening/closing, positive displacement pumps, stage separation, missile launches, and flow around other moving equipment with its dynamic mesh modeling capability. Users only need to set-up the initial mesh and specify the motion of the boundaries. FLUENT then computes the flow, automatically updating the mesh as the boundaries change shape. For applications where the boundary motion is not known ahead of time, such as store separation, it can be computed by FLUENT as part of the solution process. Engineers discover secrets of soccer free kicks

Three collaborating groups of researchers have unravelled some of the underlying mysteries of 'bending' a soccer ball during kicking which will be a feature of the upcoming Soccer World Cup in Japan and Korea this year. They were inspired to understand this technically very difficult 'art' of scoring soccer goals from dead ball "free kick" situations, perfected by such world class soccer players as Brazil's Roberto Carlos, Germany's Michael Ballack and England's David Beckham. Engineers at the University of Sheffield's Sports Engineering Research Group, Yamagata University's Sports Science Laboratory and Fluent Benelux have carried out a fundamental scientific and engineering analysis of this exciting part of the 'beautiful game'.

Fluent releases beta version of FlowLab: New educational software provides virtual fluids laboratory

UMass researcher solves the mystery of the shower curtain

There's no way to get rid of the daily annoyance of the shower curtain billowing in and sticking to an exposed body part, but there's now a way to explain the phenomenon, thanks to a researcher at the University of Massachusetts. David Schmidt, assistant professor in the mechanical and industrial engineering department, decided to map the forces acting on a shower curtain. Schmidt's areas of expertise include computer modeling of sprays, and the shower curtain question is one he's run into several times during his career. 'This is a popular question,' Schmidt said. 'It's nice to have the answer key.'

Fluent releases TGrid 3.4

Fluent Inc announces the release of TGrid 3.4, its popular unstructured meshing tool for CFD model building. All CFD analysis requires that a geometrical representation of the problem be constructed and covered with a computational mesh, or grid. TGrid is one of several tools that Fluent provides to the users of its CFD software in order to streamline and take the guesswork out of the sometimes-tedious task of building a computational mesh. An unstructured mesh is made up of elements such as tetrahedra pyramids, and wedges, in addition to the traditional hexahedral (brick) elements, for greater flexibility, particularly in the case of complicated shapes. Fluent Inc. releases version 5.5 of its FLUENT software

GT-Power is one-dimensional gas dynamics and engine simulation software developed by Gamma Technologies, Inc. (Westmont, IL). It is commonly used in the automotive industry for engine simulation. FLUENT 5.5 offers an option for users to couple their FLUENT simulations with their GT-Power simulations. This makes it easy for engineers to integrate their CFD flow modeling of components with the big picture, system-level simulation in GT-Power. Technological wizardry built into this coupling also makes the process fast and computationally economical. Currently, the coupling can take place in several areas of the simulation: velocity inlet, mass flow inlet, pressure inlet, and pressure outlet. To take advantage of the GT-Power/FLUENT coupling, users need a specialized license and the GT-Power library, specifically built for this coupling, from Gamma Technologies.
