ABB is supplying the electrical infrastructure for Beetham Tower in Manchester, a 47-storey luxury apartment building and five-star Hilton Hotel that will be one of the tallest buildings of its kind in Europe.

At 171 meters, the new landmark glass tower will dominate the city's skyline, offering spectacular views of one of Britain's largest cities and the vast Manchester-Liverpool conurbation of which it is the hub.

To ensure that this $260-million prestige project can be occupied and producing revenues as soon as possible, the customer contracted ABB to design the electrical infrastructure and install phase one within a challenging four months.

A 47-floor building requires a great deal of power, some 4 MVA for the 219 apartments and penthouses and 285-bed hotel. To ensure that this $260-million prestige project can be occupied and producing revenues as soon as possible, the customer contracted ABB to design the electrical infrastructure and install phase one within a challenging four months.

The package includes the entire 6.6 kV high voltage system and 230/440 V low voltage distribution network, as well as a 1 MVA distribution transformer, to ensure reliable power supply to the apartments and penthouses which are fetching prices as high as $5 million.

In addition ABB is also supplying a 360 kW combined heat and power unit that will generate heat and electricity for the hotel and make a significant contribution to the energy needs of the apartments.

Beetham Tower is scheduled for completion in late 2006. It will be the U.K.'s tallest building outside London and the highest living space in the country.
