BOC launches safety workshops for UK refrigerant gas users

BOC Gases : 27 January, 2003  (Company News)
BOC is set to launch a series of nationwide customer safety workshops aimed at raising awareness of the hazards of working with industrial gases and refrigerants within the refrigeration industry.
The workshops will be for those involved in the handling, storage, transportation or use of gases in the refrigeration industry, such as training and service managers, health & safety supervisors, workshop personnel and service engineers. The twelve workshops, to be held from February to April, will be run in conjunction with Gas Safe Consultants.

BOC is the first gas company in the UK to run a workshop which looks specifically at the hazards associated with industrial gases within refrigeration.

The one-day workshops will complement existing training programmes within the refrigeration industry with risk assessment of industrial and refrigerant gases in real world situations, such as:

gas properties, hazards and emergency procedures
road transportation
cylinder storage
manual handling of cylinders
risk assessment around site
all related legislation and codes of practice
It is also hoped that end users, such as major supermarket chains and food factories, will see the benefit of having an engineer/refrigeration contractor fully trained on the potential hazards of the products they bring to and use on their site and their equipment. Currently some end users use third party contractors, as well as internal engineers and external contractors.

Phil Graham, safety director, The BOC Group, said: 'Safety is BOCís number one priority, the safety of our customers and employees is paramount and it is part of our obligation to them to take all possible steps to ensure this knowledge is passed on to all gas users.

'The aim of the workshop is to enable our customersí employees to identify potential hazards and avoid dangers Ėboth personal and system related - from the common gases used by refrigerant engineers. It will also raise awareness of obligations under UK and European legislation relating to the gases employed by this industry. Many of the more serious gas related incidents occurring within this industry are the result of inappropriate use and/or storage of the industrial rather than the refrigerant gases employed.'
