Dragsters get 50,000 volt power boost with aid of DuPont Rynite PET

A powerful ignition coil made with DuPont Rynite PET thermoplastic polyester resin is providing the high-voltage spark for some of America's fastest drag racers. The MSD Pro Mag coil from MSD Ignition puts out up to 50,000 volts as it helps nitro-fueled dragsters rocket up to 330 mph from a standing start on a quarter-mile strip. Other uses for the new coil include competitive tractor pullers and racing boats. The coil's test performance shows even greater capability. In limit testing, coils made with Rynite put out up to 65,000 volts in an open circuit with no arcing or other problems, according design engineers at MSD Ignition. As part of its quality control procedures, MSD tests every coil to 50,000 volts for 15 minutes before shipping.

The coil's test performance shows even greater capability. In limit testing, coils made with Rynite put out up to 65,000 volts in an open circuit with no arcing or other problems, according design engineers at MSD Ignition. As part of its quality control procedures, MSD tests every coil to 50,000 volts for 15 minutes before shipping.

The coil has two bobbins and a distinctive bright red housing injection molded from Rynite PET. The bobbin for the primary winding is a simple thin-wall design. The bobbin for the secondary windings that generate high-voltage output is a complex unit with ten winding segments.

The use of Rynite for these components delivers substantial cost savings. The injection molded segmented bobbin costs about $3, versus $35 for a machined plastic part used on prototypes and early production versions of the coil.

Based on the outstanding performance of Rynite, MSD Ignition is extending its use of Rynite to additional high-performance coils. Prototypes of coils engineered for use in stock car racers or highly modified street cars are undergoing field trials.

The new coils underscore broader potential for Rynite PET in high-voltage electrical components, according to Dr. John Solenberger, E/E industry development manager for the DuPont Engineering Polymers business. 'Designers who think thermoplastics are limited to low- to medium-voltage electrical parts should take another look at Rynite PET,' he says.

The grade of Rynite used for the MSD ignition coil's bobbins, Rynite FR946, maintains excellent dielectric strength at the elevated temperatures sometimes produced for short periods in high-voltage situations. At 150C, samples of 1.59 mm thick disks molded from this grade retain almost 90 percent of the dielectric strength they exhibit at room temperature when tested according to ASTM D149. The housings are molded from a different grade, Rynite FR530.
