February 2004: crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute

World crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute stood at an estimated 79.5 million metric tons (mmt) in February.
World crude steel production for the 62 countries reporting to the International Iron and Steel Institute stood at an estimated 79.5 million metric tons (mmt) in February. Global production increased by 12.1% compared to February 2003 (helped to some extent by an extra day (leap year) in 2004).

Production in Asia again shows strong growth. Total production in the region reached 36.7 mmt in February, a rise of 19.8% compared to February 2003 and 16.1% YTD.

China produced 19.7 mmt of crude steel in February. This is 31.5% higher than for February 2003. YTD production in China is up 27.9% to 39.1 mmt.

South Korea (up 13.3%) has also shown a major increase in crude steel production compared to the same month in 2003.

Russian crude steel production rose by 10.6% to 5.0 mmt in February. YTD production stands at 10.3 mmt, up 6.7% on 2003. Total production in the CIS region is up by 10.6% YTD and 13.7% compared to February 2003.
