Flatmate

Du Pont Engineering Polymers : 20 October, 2004  (Company News)
The Italian entry, the
The ‘FlatMate’, made of DuPont™ Hytrel® thermoplastic polyester elastomer, consists of a perforated, flat rectangular sheet measuring 60 x 30 cm; its thickness varies from 1.5 mm to 3 mm along its edges. The sheet can be easily rolled up to form a cone, which then keeps its shape due to the material’s resilience and the moulded-in grooves and channels along the edges. It can be stored either rolled up or flat. It can be used in the kitchen like a conventional colander and has the advantage that when flat it takes up little space.

The designer, Silvia Rigoni, chose Hytrel® elastomer because it is recyclable, is approved for food contact, can be intrinsically coloured yet is translucent at low thicknesses, and remains flexible at both high and low temperatures. It resists attacks by moulds and fungi, an important advantage for cooking hygiene.

The judges were impressed by the technical and functional simplicity of this design and its functional advantages, simple assembly and use, ease of manufacture and its commercial potential.

The Imagineering contest, launched in France in 1988 to create a connection between creativity and technology, gives design students and young designers (graduated after 2000) a genuine incentive to apply their talents to innovative uses of high-performance engineering plastics. Since its launch, its coverage has broadened, and the 2004 contest, with ‘Comfort and Functionality in the Home’ as its theme, was open to entrants from Europe and Asia.

More than 1700 entrants registered for this year’s contest and 520 projects were received. More than 200 of them were submitted to regional juries in China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Spain and United Kingdom. A first prize of € 5000, a second prize of € 3000 and a third prize of € 2000 was awarded in each region. The winner from each region went forward to take part in the international contest, where a € 5000 prize went to the designer plus € 3000 to the winner’s design school.

Since its creation, more than 6000 students and young designers have entered the competition and more than 3000 projects have been submitted.
