Group Inc. announces advances in high performance medical fabrics

Polymer Group Inc : 13 January, 2007  (Company News)
Polymer Group, Inc. introduced its new MediSoft(TM) fabrics that combine softness and barrier properties to give healthcare workers greater comfort while maintaining a high level of protection.
The new MediSoft(TM) fabrics exhibit a 50 percent increase in softness over standard spunmelt fabrics used in medical applications, according to the company's internal test results. The new fabrics also exceed industry standards for protection against fluids for the class of applications for which they are targeted.

'The improved softness of MediSoft(TM) fabrics provides the high barrier protection of spunmelt combined with the softness, drapability and breathability the industry demands,' said James L. Schaeffer, PGI's chief executive officer.

Both comfort and protection are key concerns for healthcare workers globally. With today's concerns surrounding the potential of cross infections the medical industry has been moving toward fabrics with higher fluid barriers achieved through the spunmelt process to protect healthcare workers. But garments made from these fabrics can be stiff and uncomfortable, particularly after extended use.

'MediSoft(TM) fabrics give PGI the ability to offer the comfort and convenience of spunlace fabrics with the higher protection and cost advantages of spunmelt technology,' said Schaeffer.

Proprietary advances in PGI's spunmelt manufacturing process enable the company to achieve the improved softness. Available commercially, MediSoft(TM) fabrics are made at the company's facility in Nanhai, China, and are being evaluated by key global suppliers. The product was introduced at the International Engineered Fabrics Conference and Expo (IDEA04).

For comparison purposes, PGI used two tests to evaluate fabric softness: handle-o-meter testing, which measures the fabric's drapability; and the coefficient of friction, which measures its softness. MediSoft(TM) fabrics exhibit 50 percent improvements over standard spunmelt fabrics for medical applications in the former test and 40 percent improvements in the latter.

MediSoft(TM) fabrics exceed the Association of the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation gown and drape industry standard (PB70) for Level III garments of 50 centimeters in hydroheads, a measurement of barrier properties, according to test results.

With over 30 years of experience providing medical supplies under the Chicopee name, PGI offers both depth and breadth of products, multiple technologies, and a variety of fibers and resins to create the right system for medical applications.
