Innovative step-in skates for kids rely on DuPont Engineering Polymers

Du Pont Engineering Polymers : 03 August, 2002  (New Product)
In the world's first 'step-in' in-line skates for children, a chassis made of DuPont Zytel nylon resin and a rear safety clip made of DuPont Delrin acetal resin make crucial contributions to ease of use and safety. Hypno STS II skates from MGM Spa of Treviso, Italy, are making their debut at ISPO Summer 02, an international exhibition of sporting goods held in Munich, Aug. 3-6. Their wheels are mounted on a chassis that can be detached from the boot. The detachable feature allows the user to walk or skate at will.

MGM marketing manager Marco Foglio says, 'The most important design objective for the new Hypno STS II skate is that it should be easy to put on and take off independently and safely by kids in the 7 to 12 age bracket.' When the skates are needed, young users can simply step into them. When they are not in use, children can carry around the chassis and equipment such as arm and leg protectors in a special backpack, which is also supplied by MGM.

Previous Hypno skates had metal fixation pins on the side, which required manual adjustment. The latest STS II model, by contrast, requires no manual adjustment. When you step into the skate, the boot connects with the frame and automatically snaps securely into position, according to Foglio.

The chassis of Zytel is critical to skating performance, Foglio adds. 'Its design incorporates lateral fixations that are relatively flexible, and yet the entire frame displays excellent mechanical strength. The chassis supports young skaters and helps them to walk and skate safely, without twisting their ankles,' he says.

The chassis is molded from a 30 percent glass reinforced grade of Zytel 6/66 nylon resin. This material was selected for its outstanding impact resistance, high mechanical strength and good surface finish.

For the rear safety clip of the Hypno STS II skate, MGM selected DuPont Delrin acetal resin. It meets needs for excellent spring-back capability, good impact resistance, and high stiffness.

Foglio adds that the new Hypno skate was developed internally by MGM's research and development department. 'We had used DuPont Zytel in many other of our sports footwear products over the last eight years, such as the original Hypno STS I in-line skate with its removable plate (introduced in 1998) and the 'Scout' skating shoe that can either be combined with wheels for in-line roller skating or, alternatively, with a second plate incorporating a stainless steel blade, for ice-skating (introduced in 1999). We therefore knew the material and its characteristics very well and we knew we could rely on the good flow properties of Zytel during molding and its overall outstanding quality,' he said.
