Lloyd Instruments has developed a special multi-purpose grip for assess the performance of both cut pile and loop pile yarn floor coverings. Used in conjunction with one of the companyís universal materials testing machines, the grip is used to measure the force required to pull a cut or loop tuft from the carpet backing in accordance with ASTM D 1335.

Tuft bind is related to the carpetís ability to withstand snagging (which occurs when sharp-edged objects pull out the carpet fibre) or zippering (when tufts from a loop pile carpet are pulled from the backing resulting in long, lengthwise pulls). It is used in the assessment of industrial and domestic carpets and carpets used in the automotive industry.

The grip consists of a cylindrical metal sample holder mounted in a U-shaped bracket, an upper crossbar, forceps for use with cut pile carpets and a hook arrangement for use with loop pile carpets. The crossbar contains mounting fixtures for both the forceps and the hook. The sample holder assembly is mounted on the lower eye end of the test machine and a sample of the floor covering to be tested is looped around the outside of the cylindrical sample holder and clamped in place. The sample holder can freely rotate on and slide along its mounting spindle.

For cut pile testing, the tuft is clamped in a pair of forceps and the the handles of the forceps located on the crossbar attached to the moving crosshead. The test can then be performed. For loop pile testing, the forces are replaced by a double-ended stainless steel wire loop hook. One end is passed through the loop of the tuft to be tested and the other end is hooked over a boss in the centre of the crossbar. The test can then be carried out.

The assembly has a maximum capacity of 1 kN (225 lbf) and is suitable for use with any of Lloyd Instrumentsí range of single column and twin column testing machines. Other grips are available to perform additional tests on carpets and flooring such as measuring the bond strength of rubber backed carpets and foam tests on carpet underlay for instance.
