Metallized polyester film capacitor provides high-reliability operation

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. is extending the voltage range of its MKT metallized polyester film capacitors with a new device that allows designers to incorporate small, reliable MKT capacitors in an even broader variety of telecommunications, automotive, consumer, and industrial product.
Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. is extending the voltage range of its MKT metallized polyester film capacitors with a new device that allows designers to incorporate small, reliable MKT capacitors in an even broader variety of telecommunications, automotive, consumer, and industrial products.

The new MKT1820 is designed for coupling, blocking, bypassing, timing, arc-suppression, and energy storage applications in end products including line cards, motor management systems, audio and video systems, and control circuits and e-ballasts. Its extended voltage range includes options of 63 VDC, 100 VDC, 250 VDC, 400 VDC, 630 VDC, and 1000 VDC. Capacitance values for the new device range from 1000 pF to 15 mF with standard capacitance tolerances of 5%, 10%, and 20%.

Packaged in a flame-retardant, epoxy-sealed, plastic case, the MKT1820 is available in dimensions ranging from 3.5 mm by 13.0 mm up to 20.0 mm by 31.5 mm, depending on capacitance and voltage ratings. Case heights range from 8.0 mm to 35.0 mm, and manufacturers may choose from lead spacing options of between 10 mm and 27.5 mm. The maximum pulse rise time ranges from 2.5 V/μ s to 130 V/μ s, depending on lead spacing and voltage rating.

In addition to excellent self-healing capabilities, this latest capacitor in the MKT series features environmentally friendly lead (Pb)-free schooping layers and terminals. The MKT1820 provides high reliability with an operational life rated at 300,000 hours and a low failure rate of <2 FIT at 40C. The device is rated for operation over a temperature range of -55C to +125C and meets 55/125/56 IEC test classification, according to IEC 60068.

Samples and production quantities of the MKT1820 are available now, with 10- to 12-week lead times for larger orders.
