New Business Unit Pipe offers quality in quantity to the whole value chain

Borealis A/S : 03 September, 2001  (New Product)
Following the start ups of Borealis' first Borstar PP plant in Schwechat, Austria in May 2000 and the company's second plant to produce Borstar PE products at Stenungsund, Sweden in October 2000, Borealis Business Unit Pipe is well positioned to offer its customers a unique and complete product range in polyethylene and polypropylene grades for pipe applications. Borealis has further reinforced its marketing organisation to serve the entire value chain of the piping industry both in terms of PE and PP.
Borealis' upgraded Stenungsund plant known as PE3 is principally dedicated to black bimodal pipe products that will add significant PE pipe volumes to the market. The PE pipe industry is turning increasingly to Borealis' bimodal Borstar technology which enables our customers to produce pipes with remarkably enhanced properties compared to earlier generations of PE. They can expand their product portfolios with larger diameter pipes, and replace traditional materials such as concrete and clay.

Borealis recently launched the latest development in 'low sag technology' to prevent the sagging behaviour of large diameter pipes. Until now, PE materials had faced the problem of gravity flow. These new, high performance pipes are finding their markets in all current pressure applications such as drinking water transportation, natural gas distribution and sewage delivery.

Borealis is a founding member of the PE100+ Association, a marketing platform for PE100 materials. Thanks to our Borstar technology, we are a leading supplier of PE100 world-wide. In other applications like steel pipe coating, Borstar materials have already proven their performance and established Borealis as a global market leader in this segment.

The successful start up of the world's first Borstar PP plant in Schwechat, Austria forms the base for new generations of advanced Borstar pipe products that will become available in the near future. Meanwhile the success of our tailor-made stiff PP for sewerage applications has continued in the Nordic region, gaining more market share in replacing conventional materials. New PP sewerage systems have been launched in several European countries, and Borealis will support this by providing polymer expertise and market knowledge.

The challenge for a raw material supplier in today's pipe industry is in supporting the entire value chain with polymer know-how. The supplier must be a preferred speaking partner in new projects and ideas. Borealis Pipe meets this challenge by applying dedicated forces in defined areas to provide not just experience, but the openness to fully discuss new pipe industry ideas on a global level.
