New light-weight CD & DVD mailer made with DuPont

Du Pont Engineering Polymers : 02 December, 2003  (Company News)
A new light-weight mailer, named FlatMail
FlatMail® has been specially designed by the envelope manufacturer Curtis 1000 Europe AG, to ensure that the envelope, containing one unboxed disc, has an overall weight of less than 20 grams, allowing it to be sent as a ‘standard letter’ at the minimum postage rate of 0.24 Euros. This is in direct contrast to the normal procedure of sending a boxed disc in a padded or heavyweight-paper envelope, which exceeds the 20-gram threshold and incurs postage costs above 0.69 Euros. Due to the protective and robust nature of DuPont™Tyvek®, Flatmail® provides optimal protection to the CD or DVD, and its contents.

According to Mine Uran of DuPont Nonwovens, who produce Tyvek®, there are expectations that the launch of FlatMail® will encourage more companies to increase their direct mail activities. “We very much hope that this new mailer will stimulate new interest among multimedia agencies, direct marketing specialists and software producers in reaching their mass customers at a relatively low cost. In order to meet customer requirements for a unique and specific offering, there is also the opportunity to customise the mailer with company logos”

FlatMail® meets the German post office’s dimensional requirements and passed the company’s rigorous test protocol to ensure that both the mailer and its contents pass smoothly through its automatic sorting machines.

Heike Barjenbruch of the Deutsche Post Direct Marketing Centre, who awarded the certification on behalf of the German post office, commented, “Although the certification of this innovative CD/DVD mailer could lead to reduced postal income to the German post office, it also offers a total solution at a lower cost to our clients, which will also contribute to volume growth in the direct marketing sector. We shall definitely be recommending the new Tyvek® CD/DVD mailer to our clients”.

Curtis 1000 Europe AG also received German post office certification for a broad range of their Tyvek® pocket and expander envelopes. The certification of Tyvek® envelopes is important to allow the sender to qualify for the minimum postage rates, as the envelopes are then certified as passing through the automatic sorting machinery.

DuPont™Tyvek® is a flashspun HDPE sheet structure that has introduced new dimensions of protection, security and safety in industries ranging from protective apparel, construction, printing, graphics and packaging. Flatmail® therefore benefits from the outstanding and unique properties of the nonwoven material. Lighter than paper, water-, tear and puncture resistant, Tyvek® provides superior dust and antistatic protection and its non-abrasive smooth surface prevents CD/DVD scratching. The unique and attractive swirl surface look is also perfect for writing as well as printing on.
