New martensitic stainless steel for fastener industry

Trinamet stainless, developed by Carpenter Technology Corporation, Wyomissing, PA, is a martensitic, magnetic stainless steel with a unique combination of three characteristics critical to the fastener industry: good corrosion resistance, high heat-treated hardness, and excellent cold formability. This new stainless was developed to provide the fastener industry with an alloy that has an improved combination of properties over alloys commonly used today. It can be considered for a variety of fastener applications including sheet metal screws, self-drilling construction fasteners, and other various bolts and fasteners exposed to atmospheric conditions.

Corrosion Resistance
Trinamet's corrosion resistance in industrial environments is comparable to Type 304 and 17-4 stainless steels. It is an upgrade from Type 410 in applications where improved corrosion resistance is sought. It is also an alternative to Type 304 and 17-4 when corrosion resistance cannot be sacrificed but a higher hardness is desirable.

Heat Treated Hardness
In the fully heat-treated condition, Trinamet can achieve a hardness of 53 HRC in comparison to Type 410 and 17-4, which are capable of less than 45 HRC. Type 304 is a non-hardenable stainless with a hardness less than 35 HRC when cold formed.

Cold-formed
Along with the high hardness and good corrosion resistance, Trinamet stainless can also be readily cold formed. It has a room temperature ultimate tensile strength of 90-110 ksi and it work hardens at a rate of 1.1 ksi per percent reduction, which is comparable to Type 410 stainless steel. Trinamet is therefore a potential substitution for 17-4, an alloy that has proven difficult to cold form, in applications where the hardness and corrosion resistance of 17-4 are desired but its poor cold formability is a barrier.

Trinamet stainless, with its carefully balanced composition of corrosion resistance, high heat-treated hardness and cold formability, is available in wire from .060 in. (1.524 mm) up to 1 in. (25.4mm) coil.
