RAD incorporates EtherMap-3 Ethernet over SONET/SDH mapper

FCD-155 transports new generation IP/Ethernet services and traditional TDM services using asynchronous tributary modules for both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint networks. The FCD-155 platform has been deployed and benchmarked by several carriers for metro access and premises-based transparent LAN service, Internet access and Ethernet private line applications. RAD is expanding field trials of the system with particular emphasis on the EoS application.

Our complete line of EoS products, which include the EtherMap-12 and EtherMap-48 devices, will enable our customers to rapidly extend their platforms to OC-12 and OC-48. We provide software compatibility across our entire EoS product family to enable a smooth migration path for our customers,' said Dr. Hoshang Mulla, Vice President of Marketing at TranSwitch. TranSwitch collaborated closely with RAD on incorporating the EtherMap-3 into the FCD-155 platform for over a year and a half during their system development and application testing phases, which centered on verification of hardware features and integration testing. The VLSI solutions company supplied early device prototypes, scripts, driver software, design review and on-going consultation and debugging assistance for specific applications. TranSwitch’s extensive system design and applications support enabled RAD to optimize their platform’s performance for specific Ethernet traffic parameters, including GFP protocol.

'Low or high order virtually concatenated traffic, which consists of prioritized Ethernet/VLAN traffic wrapped in GFP, is becoming the pre-eminent EoS transport service. Being able to offer this high value service will allow us to significantly broaden our penetration in the emerging customer premises equipment and customer located equipment access markets that we serve,' stated Yoram Holtz, RAD’s Vice President of Marketing. The collaboration with TranSwitch has provided a key ingredient for hitting the market early and differentiating the FCD platform from competitive platforms,' he concluded.

The EtherMap-3 device is a critical element in RAD’s transitioning technologies portfolio, which includes Ethernet over SONET/SDH. RAD is a leading CPE/CLE vendor, offering innovative solutions such as TDM-over-IP gateways, its Multiservice Access Platform and Compressed Voice System. Customers seeking simple, price-sensitive yet powerful communications solutions use RAD gear to serve both mainstream and niche market requirements. RAD solutions are designed to offer carriers significantly improved scalability, reduced footprint size and greater cost-effectiveness. Using RAD’s FCD-155, carriers can now remotely provision Ethernet services into existing metro networks seamlessly, enabling reliable Ethernet services previously associated only with TDM. These Ethernet services can also be incrementally tuned for optimal bandwidth levels.

The EtherMap-3 is the industry’s first and most versatile OC-3 EoS device for both GigE and 10/100 Ethernet. It can be utilized individually or as part of a telecom bus-compatible mapper and framer chip set to deliver full TDM capability. EtherMap-3’s high degree of integration enables direct mapping of 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet into SONET/SDH STS-3/STM-1 transport payloads. The device supports connection of up to eight 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports using SMII interfaces or a single 1,000 Mbps Ethernet port using a GMII interface. Ethernet frames are encapsulated using GFP, LAPS, LAPF or PPP/BCP protocol. The encapsulated frames are then mapped into either virtually concatenated low or high order payloads such as VT1.5 SPE/VC-12/STS-1 SPE/VC-3 or into contiguously concatenated payloads such as STS-3c SPE/VC-4. For both low and high order VC payloads, optional on-chip standards-based LCAS processing allows hitless dynamic bandwidth adjustments. A powerful hardware- and RTOS-independent EtherMap device driver provides full access to all features through APIs.
