UOP and IOCL Start-up First Penex Process Technology

Honeywell Specialty Materials : 23 April, 2006  (New Product)
UOP LLC, a Honeywell company, today announced that Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. has successfully commissioned and accepted an isomerization unit using UOP's Penex TM process technology.
IOCL licensed the UOP technology for the isomerization unit at its refinery in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India. IOCL built the unit, which has a capacity of 12,000 barrels per stream day, to meet growing demand for isomerate as India continues to move forward with meeting clean fuel specifications under its Bharat Stage-III initiative, which is aimed at reducing pollution produced by motor vehicles. Isomerate is used in gasoline blends to increase its octane and reduce aromatic, benzene and olefin content.

UOP's Penex process upgrades light naphtha components to high octane motor gasoline blend stocks, and is now being used at more than 120 refineries worldwide.

'UOP and IOCL engineers worked together to bring this unit on-stream in a very short time frame given the growing need for isomerate in the country as India continues to move forward with meeting clean fuel specifications,' said Norm Gilsdorf, Senior Vice President and General Manager of UOP's Process Technology and Equipment strategic business unit. 'The ongoing work we do with IOCL is a win-win proposition for everyone.'

In 2004, UOP worked with IOCL to commission a linear alkylbenzene complex at its refinery in Baroda, Gujarat, India. The complex marked IOCL's entry into the petrochemical field. The complex uses UOP's UnionfiningTM, MolexTM, PacolTM, DeFineTM and DetalTM process unit. UOP technology is a key element in the production of LAB; almost all new LAB complexes built in the last two decades have used UOP technology.

IOCL is India's largest business enterprise ranked 170th in the Fortune Global 500 with revenues in excess of $34 billion USD. Indian Oil operates 10 of the country's 18 refineries with a combined crude processing capacity of approximately one million barrels per day. Indian Oil, together with its subsidiary IBP, is India's market leader in petroleum products with a 56 percent share. It also operates the largest network of crude and product pipelines in the country totaling more than 9,000 kilometers (approximately 5,600 miles).
