SINGLE-SITE CATALYST POLYETHYLENE FOR PACKAGING FILM
27 July 2004 - Borealis A/S
| Two new families of single-site catalysts (SSC) polyethylene (PE) from Borealis, based on unimodal and Borealis’ bimodal Borstar technology, have been designed to create new packaging options for all major segments of the fast-growing SSC PE market. |
With Borecene, Borealis marks its entry into the unimodal SSC LLDPE blown and cast film market. The bi-modal SSC BorPlus™ offers uniquely superior processability. “By extending the PE product mix with the Borecene and BorPlus families, we are now in a position to offer our customers the opportunity to produce unique packaging solutions made entirely with Borealis products,’’ says John Thompson, Marketing Manager, Borealis Film & Fibre. “Enhanced sealing, more efficient processing, excellent mechanical and optical properties mean that our customers can really measure how and where value can be created in their film production and indeed for their end-product user. We are at the beginning of an exciting journey with our customers, who we will help to unleash the full potential of the ‘new’ Borealis PE product range,’’ added Thompson. Borecene products are available for blown and cast film applications. The bi-modal BorPlus™ products are available for blown film applications. The materials, created via SSC polymerisation, exhibit a range of property and processing benefits which include excellent film clarity, and second-to-none sealability. In addition, the BorPlus materials are the first SSC -LLDPE grades with excellent bubble stability, drawdown, and throughput for blown film applications. Applications include shrink- or over-wrap films and food packaging for meats, cheeses, liquids, and snack foods; freezer film; stretch and shrink films; and shipping bags, industrial liners and grocery bags. “With the fast-growing use of co-extruded materials, converters are searching for cost-effective combinations of polymers to achieve the best packaging solutions for their processes and more importantly the end uses. Through extensive research efforts, Borealis has ensured that combinations of our new SSC products together with our Borstar Ziegler-Natter catalyst-based LLDPE and our LDPE grades result in the best possible co-extruded film solution obtainable for any given application,” said Thompson.
