NGEE ANN POLYTECHNIC SIGNS MEMORANDUM-OF-UNDERSTANDING WITH BELGIUM-BASED MATERIALISE N.V.
12 January 2001 - Materialise NV

Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Ngee Ann) today signed a memorandum-of-understanding (MOU) with Belgium based pre-processing software leader, Materialise N.V.

This MOU formally strengthens the relationship between Ngee Ann and Materialise and aims to promote collaborative projects and joint training initiatives.

With this alliance, Ngee Ann and Materialise will pool their strengths and expertise in specialised technology education and software research and development to promote Rapid Prototyping (RP) technology and Rapid Tooling (RT) applications in Singapore. RT is the use of RP technology to design and make functional components in a quick and cost effective way. Ngee Ann and Materialise are targeting the manufacturing, consumer and moulding industries.

Under the agreement, Ngee Ann and Materialise will work together to:

Establish the Digital Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technology concept in Singapore through digital tooling and CAD communication with other industries. CAD is the use of computer to draw three-dimensional model for subsequent production.

Improve the scope of Rapid Prototyping applications in untapped local industries.
Establish a Medical Rapid Prototyping reference centre in Ngee Ann which allows Ngee Ann and Materialise to offer its services to the healthcare industry.

Promote technology transfer and awareness of Rapid Prototyping and Rapid Tooling through short courses, seminars and staff attachment programme to Materialise.

Mr Chan Kwan Yew, Ngee Ann’s Deputy Director, Mechanical Engineering programme said that Ngee Ann is constantly exploring ways to enhance the value and relevance of its engineering courses to maximise the benefits to students.

'The partnership with Materialise is a strategic move to enhance our student learning experience and to expose our staff to the latest technology. We have selected Materialise as one of the contributors to our knowledge base for teaching and learning because of their strong and innovative approach in managing business and developing technology. This approach is in line with our learning model, to move our curriculum away from technical-based education to one that emphasises on design, innovation and management.'
