A TOTAL TOOLING SOLUTION - MAGICS TOOLING 3.0, EASY TO USE AND AUTOMATED TOOL DESIGN SOFTWARE
06 January 2001 - Materialise NV

Materialise, a leader in STL handling software, has released its third generation tool design software 'Magics Tooling 3.0', presenting a fundamentally different approach in mould design software.

Current solutions for tool design compromise between functionality, speed and ease of use. Magics Tooling is a dedicated package optimised to do one thing and to do it well: design and create the tool in the fastest way possible. The automated functions found in Magics Tooling allow for different tooling configurations to be explored.

1 tool designer for 3 CAM programmers
Magics Tooling is an excellent demonstration of Materialises commitment to innovation and design automation. 'We focus on creating software that optimises our customers design process and that speeds up their time-to-market. With the Magics Tooling 3.0 software we are moving closer to this goal since it significantly decreases the tool design time. Thanks to the design automation, Magics Tooling 3.0 boosts the productivity of mould designers. One tool designer for 3 CAD programmers, it works perfectly, we proved it in our RapidParts tool shop,' says Wilfried Vancraen, Managing Director of Materialise.

No room for costly mistakes
The strength of Magics Tooling is its unmatched speed combined with its ease of use. This easy to learn software has a unique digital CAD kernel that speeds up the tooling process remarkably. Its undercut detector, the cutaway views, measurements and tool previews provide an accurate understanding of the tool requirements. The ability to have a preview of the complexity of the tool in minutes allows quoting tools quicker, more accurately and prevents costly mistakes. Magics Tooling solves compatibility problems with most CAD and CAM programs. CAD files can be imported into the software and converted into STL files. Using STL data to design the tool avoids logistical problems and ensures compatibility with a lot of CAM packages.

Straight from scanned STL object to tool design
With Magics Tooling 3.0 reverse engineering has become redundant: it is now possible to go straight from scanned STL object to tool design thanks to the unique function to smooth the parting line. The IGES export of the wireframe, the advanced translate menu and the export of separate STL files are all functions that were especially developed to meet the requirements of CAM packages.

EDM design effort reduced to a minimum
Not only does Magics Tooling enable the creation of core and cavity, it supports the tool making process up to designing the slide-actions and electrodes. The EDM design effort is reduced to a minimum: with Magics Tooling 3.0 electrodes can automatically be generated in only three simple steps. And even more: Magics Tooling creates clear and extended reports that contain all necessary information to support the manufacturing and use of electrodes. This way a clear communication to the machine operator is ensured, while reducing the possibilities for errors.

Magics Tooling 3.0 takes excellent advantage of the extended capabilities for design automation, thus providing a fast track route to perform the complex tasks of tool design. With Magics Tooling Materialise continues to be a leader in STL manipulation software.

About: Materialise NV
Begun as a joint venture with the University of Leuven-Belgium, Materialise was one of the first European rapid prototyping service bureaus. It has since grown into a European supplier of plastic prototype solutions, and today is a worldwide leader in the rapid prototyping industry. Materialise offers a broad range of rapid prototyping, tooling and digital CAD software. In addition, Materialise prototypes and software have established a reputation in medicine and dentistry, with clinicians the world over using them in the most complex surgical cases. Its design products division concentrates on the development of rapid manufacturing. The company is privately owned with several subsidiaries in Europe, Asia and the USA, and employs over 300 people in its 4 divisions.

* Materialise Industrial Services to "materialise" technical prototypes and small series through the most advanced prototyping and tooling techniques.
* Materialise Software to develop the technical software applications that allow a more efficient use of the rapid prototyping techniques.
* Materialise Medical to create medical models using these prototyping techniques and to develop medical software packages that are used by clinicians worldwide to assist them in the most complex cases of surgery.
* Materialise.MGX to manufacture design products for the end-user market. MGX is the youngest division and it draws on the knowledge and expertise of the prototyping division.
