ABB SUBSTATION ONE OF THE BEST IN ASIA
11 March 2007 - ABB Automation Technologies
| ABB has successfully delivered a state-of-the-art substation to secure power reliability in the central business district of Makati City, the financial capital of the Philippines. “This substation is one of the best in Asia,” says the customer’s CEO. |
Situated in the heart of Metro Manila’s Central Business District, the 115/34.5 kV gas insulated substation was required by owner Manila Electric Company (Meralco) to meet stringent demands for size, safety, minimal environmental impact and architectural design. The central business district is the financial and commercial capital of the Philippines, home to the country's Stock Exchange, most of Manila’s five-star hotels and the majority of the country’s embassies and ambassadorial residences. It also houses a number of exclusive apartment blocks and gated communities. With space at a premium in Manila, the new substation built by ABB had to be compact and fit into the surrounding neighborhood. Meralco was keen to increase power capacity and secure quality and reliability by building a new state-of-the-art substation for this high-profile district and hub of the Philippines economy. Overcoming local opposition But with space at a premium and local residents opposing the construction of electrical infrastructure in their neighborhood, it was essential that the substation have a minimal footprint and enhance its surroundings architecturally and esthetically. It also had to satisfy strict city council requirements for safety and environmental friendliness. The substation has an initial capacity of 166 megavolt amperes, enough to power about 30,000 homes, with provision for future expansion by an additional 83 MVA. ABB has previously supplied seven gas-insulated substations for the Metro Manila area and was again selected by Meralco for this sensitive installation in a local park. The turnkey contract resulted in a compact and landscaped design that met the demands and expectations of the city council and local stakeholders. Most importantly, it enabled Meralco to secure power supply to the focal point of Metro Manila. “The substation is considered to be one of the best in Asia,” said Manolo Lopez, Meralco’s chief executive officer at the opening ceremony. “It ensures fast response to any disruptive power conditions in Makati City.” The substation has an initial capacity of 166 megavolt amperes, enough to power about 30,000 homes, with provision for future expansion by an additional 83 MVA. ABB is the leading supplier of gas insulated substations worldwide.
