ABB UNIGEAR, THE TOUGHEST SWITCHGEAR IN THE WORLD
20 March 2007 - ABB Automation Technologies
| UniGear is the world’s leading medium-voltage switchgear, and the only one able to withstand the component-crunching effects of earthquakes, 1,500-kilogram power hammers, and the endless grind of ship vibrations. |
Other switchgear brands claim robust performance based on engineering calculations, but UniGear is the only medium-voltage switchgear to have successfully passed the laboratory tests of international agencies certifying its suitability in seismically active locations and demanding marine applications. The tests were carried out at the ISMES Structural Test Laboratory in Italy, one of the few labs in the world with a 30-ton vibration table on three moving axes to simulate violent earthquakes and other seismic activity. UniGear and each of its component parts, REF542plus control and protection units, VD4 and Vmax vacuum circuit breakers, HD4 gas-insulated circuit breakers, and VSC contactors, met the standards of IEEE 693-1997 and Lloyd’s Register for withstanding the effects of high levels of seismic activity and ship vibrations. Impact tests In another series of tests at the Cetena Italian Ship Research Center, UniGear was subjected to extreme impacts with the force of an underwater explosion, powerful enough to lift a ship out of the water and break it in two. Pummeled six times with a 1,500 kg power hammer to simulate the effects of an explosion, UniGear remained intact and operational at the end of the test, a good indicator of the product’s impressive strength and reliability. ABB is the world’s leading supplier of switchgear for marine application, with more than 5,000 panels in service on all types of vessel worldwide.
