Sandvik Materials Technology has developed a complete package of welding products for joint and overlay welding of Alloy 690 (Sandvik Sanicro 69), a nickel-chromium-iron alloy used in the construction of steam generators in nuclear power plants. The launch of the new range coincides with Sandvik’s recent experience of increased worldwide market activity for major, new installation and refurbishment nuclear projects. The new product programme has enabled Sandvik to offer complete packages of materials, comprising tube, pipe and welding consumables. The Alloy 690 (Sandvik Sanicro 69) grade, as well as its resistance to pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in primary side PWR water conditions, is characterised by good weldability. Now Sandvik has launched a package of welding consumables, which are more hot cracking resistant than other consumables of their type in the market. The welding wire designated Sandvik Sanicro 68HP has been developed for MIG, TIG and plasma arc welding and the covered electrode Sandvik Sanicro 69 for shielded metal-arc welding. Both offer good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and to general and intergranular corrosion. The third product is the strip/flux combination Sandvik Sanicro 69HP/Flux 59S for electroslag surfacing, which also offers good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion. The complementary flux provides excellent slag removal and bead appearance and gives good safety margins against micro-cracking.
