NICKEL COATED STAINLESS STEEL SPRING WIRE OPENS UP NEW DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES
07 April 2007 - Sandvik Materials Technology UK
| Sandvik Materials Technology offers spring makers many benefits from its extensive wire manufacturing and nickel coating capability for stainless steel spring wire. A combination of improved coiling, enhanced wire processing characteristics and production advantages provide spring makers increased productivity and opens up new spring design opportunities. |
Nickel is one of the most common metal coatings for stainless steel spring wire. Today, it is the coating of choice and the preferred alternative for spring makers producing complicated springs with tight tolerances. Sandvik claims that its nickel coated wire leads directly to higher spring making productivity. Faster and more accurate coilability, through good lubrication properties at high coiling speeds, no additional lubricant is needed, increases production yields and reduces coiling tool wear. This in turn, leads to less machine downtime and changeover costs. Easy cleaning in alkaline solutions and dust free coiling also contributes to higher productivity. In terms of spring design, nickel coated wire has greater corrosion resistance in certain environments than similar specification dry drawn wire. Extensive salt spray testing on several different material grades proves that nickel coated wire resists corrosion attack far better, particularly over time. Where spring appearance is important, springs made from Sandvik nickel coated wire maintain a high quality stainless appearance and do not discolour after tempering. It is possible, therefore to produce springs with the strength benefits of stainless but without losing the ‘look’ of stainless materials. With particular relevance for the electronics industry Sandvik nickel coated wire has good soldering properties. Sandvik nickel coated wire is produced in two versions. Sandvik Nicoat A is nickel coated with a coated surface finish and supplied in diameters from 0.22-2.40mm. Sandvik Nicoat B is nickel coated with a bright surface finish and is available in 0.15-0.80mm diameters.
