DUPONT CREATES MEDIUM PERFORMANCE POLYMER MODIFIER
30 June 2004 - DuPont Engineering Polymers
| DuPont has announced the entry of its new cost-effective, medium performance copolymer for the modified polymer industry. |
Called Fusabond®AEB-560D, the new product is a chemically modified ethylene acrylate copolymer that provides a more economical functionalised ethylene copolymer for polyamide (PA) modification than standard grafted copolymer technology. DuPont ™ Fusabond® AEB-560D resin delivers comparable toughness versus traditional maleic anhydride acrylate terpolymer tougheners; however, it also provides additional performance attributes. It improves mould flow, produces less reduction in flexural modulus than incumbent intermediate tougheners, provides surface finish advantages, and creates a more cost-effective toughener that maintains its resiliency from room temperature to – 20 degrees C. In addition, Fusabond® AEB560D can be utilised in other applications to function as a coupling agent, compatibiliser and impact modifier in a wide assortment of resin systems. One of these potential applications is the use as a coupling agent in halogen-free flame retardant thermoplastic wire and cable compositions. “We are committed to the polymer modifier market, and our approach is to work with customers on both their present and future needs,” said Penny L. Perry, Ph.D., director, DuPont Industrial Polymers. “This product development is in direct response to our customers asking us for alternative modifiers that help them meet specific performance and cost requirements. Additionally, we can guarantee customers the product quality their applications require, as well as continuity of supply.” The latest addition to the DuPont family of nylon modifiers, Fusabond®AEB-560D complements the present line of high-performance modifiers: MF-416D, MN-493D and MN-494D. Fusabond®AEB-560D provides a medium level of performance in helping compounders boost toughness and incorporate glass fibre and other fillers into a wide range of plastics. DuPont manufactures Fusabond® grades using a variety of base resins and graft levels. Resins in the DuPont™ Fusabond® product line are modified polymers that have been functionalised (typically by maleic anhydride grafting) to help bond polymers used in toughened, filled and blended compounds. The product line includes modified ethylene acrylate copolymers, ethylene acrylate carbon monoxide terpolymers, ethylene vinyl acetates (EVAs), polyethylenes, metallocene polyethylenes, ethylene propylene rubbers and polypropylenes.
