Dow Corning has introduced a line of natural lipids that can be used with silicones to allow formulators to meet the multifunctional and multi-beneficial needs of consumers. Rich in essential fatty acids, Dow Corning lipids are good moisturizers and hair conditioners (especially ethnic hair care products) and can even restore the skin’s barrier function. They can be used in combination with silicones, which are good emollients that improve the feel of formulations, to create smoother feeling products with low film residue, greasiness and tackiness. “Incorporating natural lipids in formulations had been difficult because of their inherent oxidative instability, especially for lipids with a high content of essential fatty acids, such as borage and evening primrose oils,” said Dirk Soontjens, Global Leader for the Expanded Offering Team for the Dow Corning Corporation Life Sciences Division’s Innovation Team. “Dow Corning lipids are internally stabilized to overcome these challenges. To deliver these lipids also in concentrate emulsions combined with silicones provides additional benefits for the cosmetics formulator.” Replicating practices that have been used for centuries, Dow Corning lipids are naturally derived from plant seeds, fruit nuts or kernels, mango, kokum, black currant, evening primrose, borage, camelina and shea, that come from such locations as India, Burma, Bangladesh, Pakistan, East Asia, East Africa, Mexico, Central America and China.
