DUPONT LAUNCHES NEW CLASS OF ENGINEERING THERMOPLASTIC VULCANIZATES

A new class of engineering thermoplastic vulcanizates (ETPV) for demanding automotive and industrial applications is now commercially available from DuPont.

Known as DuPont™ ETPV, the new material combines many desirable characteristics of cross-linked rubbers with those of thermoplastic elastomers, allowing both processors and end-users to make cost-savings.

DuPont™ ETPV extends the range of applications for thermoplastic elastomers, especially where increased resistance to heat and fluids is required. Parts made of the new material resist oil, grease and chemicals over a temperature range of –40 °C to 160 °C; further testing up to 170 °C is under way. Its combination of properties makes it suitable for under-the-bonnet automotive applications such as ducts and hoses, ignition seals, two-component seals and body plugs, hydraulic hoses and inboard constant-velocity-joint (CVJ) boots.

Supplied in the form of pellets, DuPont™ ETPV is suitable for injection-moulding, blow-moulding, extrusion or bi-component moulding on standard thermoplastic processing equipment. Initially, two grades are available, a 90 Shore A at the higher end of the hardness range, and a 60 Shore A at the lower end. Both grades are available in standard (1000 hours at 150 °C) and heat-stabilised (3000 hours at 150 °C) versions. Further grades are being developed.
Compared to cross-linked rubber, DuPont™ ETPV offers several advantages.

• Processing is more economical, as cycle times are faster and no compounding or post curing is needed.
• As compounding errors cannot occur, control over quality is improved.
• It contains no extractables, so it does not age like rubber.
• It is recycleable.
