DOW CORNING PRESENTS SAFETY AWARD FROM PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST FOUNDATION

Recent laws mandate the installation of blast-resistant windows in all new federal buildings. Dow Corning Corporation is a member of the Protecting People First Foundation, which was founded in the wake of the 1995 Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City. The Protecting People First Foundation strives to inform those in the building industry about the importance of protective glazing.

PPFF was the conception of Aren Almon-Kok, whose daughter, Baylee, was killed in the Murrah Federal Building bombing. According to a foundation spokesman, Almon-Kok was shocked by the amount of shattered glass at the Oklahoma City site. She knew it had to be responsible for many of the injuries and deaths. Since then, Congressional reports have indicated lives could have been saved and injuries reduced if protective glazing were in place at the time of the bombing.

The mission of the Protecting People First Foundation is to “raise awareness of the hazard of flying glass, most deadly in terrorist bombings and natural disasters.”

The new Oklahoma City Federal Building stands as a testament to the Foundation’s work. The U.S. General Services Administration used a window system developed by Dow Corning, MasonryArts, Solutia and Viracon, all Foundation members.

The four companies, along with Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry, presented the Protecting People First Foundation Safety Award to GSA representatives April 24th, during the opening ceremony of a two-day symposium about the importance of protective glazing. Bob Schroeder, Director, Americas Construction Industry, presented the award on behalf of Dow Corning.

The symposium, which marked the 8th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, was held at the Westin Hotel in Oklahoma City. During the two-day symposium, Dow Corning Construction Solutions Representative Bill O’Brien participated in a roundtable discussion called “Saved by a Window: A Case Study of the Pentagon’s Blast-Resistant Glazing and the Lives Saved on 9/11.
