CHINA APPLICATION CENTER INAUGURATED TO FACILITATE COLLABORATIVE CUSTOMER INNOVATION
28 April 2007 - Dow Corning - EEI

The US-based Dow Corning Corporation announced today the establishment of its China Application Center, located next to its current processing plant in the Songjiang Industrial Zone of Shanghai. As a part of the company’s investment plan in China, the new Application Center represents Dow Corning’s latest contribution to global R&D excellence and strengthened customer collaboration in developing innovative applications and technology solutions.

Dow Corning’s Chief Technology Officer James White and Greater China Regional Manager WK Ho hosted the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Center with officials from China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, the Shanghai municipal and Songjiang District governments, as well as customers and business partners from the region.

“The China Application Center represents our long-term commitment to contribute to our customers’ success and to invest in the future of China,” he explained. “We plan to do this in several ways, through sharing our global expertise, hand-in-hand collaboration with customers and through the sponsorship of Chinese academic scientists exploring high potential research on the frontiers of science.”

“By leading with technology and winning with service, Dow Corning is well positioned to help Chinese businesses compete and win in the evolving global marketplace,” said James White.

Dow Corning’s synergistic products and solutions are designed to give Chinese companies a competitive advantage in the international marketplace. They also serve to spur growth of many of China’s pillar industries, electronics, energy and power generation, automotive, aviation, petrochemicals, infrastructural development, and other industries where silicon-based products, technology, ideas and services can enhance the performance of a wide range of products, making them last long and work better.

“With intense competition both locally and globally, Chinese companies need to leverage the latest technology and constant innovation to differentiate themselves and succeed in the marketplace,” said Mr. Tang Zhuzhou, Chairman of China Petroleum and Chemical Industries Association. “Clearly, Dow Corning’s new Application Center provides an excellent opportunity for domestic enterprises to embrace world-class products and solutions at the threshold of cutting-edge science.”

Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and over 20 applications engineers and technical service staff working in six laboratories, Dow Corning’s China Application Center will focus on application areas of construction (sealants and adhesives), textiles (fabric finishing, softening, thread lubrication), process and paper for chemical industries (pulp and paper manufacturing antifoams, paper release coatings), oil & gas recovery (defoamers), personal care applications (antiperspirants, skin care, lipsticks, hair care products), the automotive after-market (seals, auto care), power generation(electrical insulation to support distribution of power), and electronics.

In the future the Applications Center will be used to conduct research with customers. Dow Corning’s processing plant in Songjiang, like all company facilities, has received global ISO 9001 registration. The ISO 9000 family of standards represents an international consensus that an organization can continually deliver products and services that meet customers’ quality requirements.

Dow Corning invests 6-7 percent of annual sales in R&D, far exceeding the industry average, and has significantly more patents in the U. S. than competitors. The company’s scientists and technologists work with customers’ scientists to develop new innovations that will create opportunities and new applications to give customers’ products a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Dow Corning conducts trend research regularly to identify emerging opportunities and works with customers to invest in new products and advancements for existing products for the future.

Long before the launch of China Application Center, Dow Corning has been closely involved with leading Chinese academic institutions and universities through collaboration on organosilicon chemistry research. Through its sponsorships and joint research projects with the Peking University and the Institute of Chemistry, China Academy of Sciences, Dow Corning provides financial support to Ph. D. students who are pioneering state-of-the-art research areas like silicon containing organic lightemitting polymers, synthesis of molecular recognition, and high MW polysilsesquioxanes. Following the opening ceremony, James White will host a technical roundtable with three leading professors from the two institutions to share experiences and discuss findings on the frontiers of silicon science.
