FIRST MULTIMEDIA ONLINE JOURNAL BRINGING TOGETHER COMMUNICATIONS SCHOLARS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
The International Journal of Communication is a free, online academic journal published by the USC Annenberg Center for Communication and edited by professors Manuel Castells and Larry Gross of the USC Annenberg School for Communication. The journal is “aimed at the widest audience of scholars and others interested in the myriad of issues communication scholarship engages with,” said Gross, who along with Castell came up with the concept in a conversation they had last year. “We discovered we both had the same idea, that such a free online journal, that was also multimedia but adhering to the highest academic standards, was something that was now feasible and waiting for someone to just do it. So we said, why not us?” Gross said their creation is the first multimedia e-journal for communication scholarship as well as the first to address a multidisciplinary audience and to be available without charge or the requirement of membership in a professional association. It also boasts an editorial board of unequalled eminence in the field, he added. The inaugural issue includes articles by scholars from Australia, Canada, China, Israel, Great Britain and the United States. The first issue also features book reviews and a series of essays written in honor of Roger Silverstone, the late professor who convened the Department of Media & Communications at the London School of Economics & Political Science. The issue also includes an interview with theorist Fritjof Capra, a preview of global Hollywood in 2010 by Toby Miller and an analysis of Fair Use concepts in documentary film production. Taking advantage of the capabilities of online publication, the journal offers readers the opportunity to make comments that will appear alongside the articles, thus creating a venue for real-time dialogue and debate not found in traditional print-based scholarly journals. The editors hope to provide greater exposure for their authors' work and encourage the freer distribution of scholarly information. “In an increasingly globalized academic community,” Gross said, “Web-based publication available anywhere in the world, without charge, extends and democratizes the conversation among scholars, permitting those previously excluded to join as full participants.”
