EXTENSION OF DUPONT IMAGINEERING DESIGN COMPETITION 2003/4 AND NEW THEME ANNOUNCED
09 July 2003 - DuPont Engineering Polymers
| DuPont Engineering Polymers has announced the extension of its 2003-2004 Imagineering design competition to Asia, and will be looking for ‘innovative applications of engineering polymers to improve comfort and functionality at home’. |
Once more, students and recently graduated designers throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa and now Asia (China, Hong-Kong and Japan) are invited to send in their projects using partly, or entirely, engineering polymers. Registration, which can be carried out at www.dupont-imagineering.com, is from September 2003 to January 2004 - with the finals being held in summer 2004. Further details on the theme and organisational aspects of the competition will be available online from the beginning of September 2003 onwards. The chosen theme for the competition reflects two strong sociological trends, those of comfort and functionality at home – ‘comfort’ relates to making daily life more enjoyable, while ‘functionality’ looks at the practical side of things. Using normal daily life as their starting point, DuPont encourages students to take a new and creative look on how certain activities at the heart of their own habitat could be done better, provide greater comfort or made more practical. This should be done through the design of a new product or part of a product, or a service – or the re-design of existing products or services. The contest is open to students officially enrolled for the university year 2003-2004 in the faculties of design, industrial design or engineering in a college, school or university; and to designers, design engineers and engineers, graduated from 2000 onwards. The national winners will receive €5,000 each, with an additional €5,000 going to the overall international winner - and a €3,000 donation to his/her college. The DuPont Imagineering design competition was established to encourage young engineers and designers to find new and innovative applications for engineering polymers and to emphasise the connection between creativity and technology that will become part of our lives tomorrow. The selection criteria for winning entries include creativity of the product and of the material, ease of manufacture and quality of presentation. The product, or at least one of the essential parts, has to integrate engineering polymers and the accent must be put on the specific characteristics of the polymers used. Imagineering started in France in 1988, being held at two-yearly intervals, while Spain launched their competition in 1996. In these countries the competition has already acquired a reputation as an influential interface between the design community and the world of plastics. While the 1999/2000 competition was already expanded in scope to include the rest of Europe, Imagineering 2003-2004 is open for the first time to Asiatic participants including China, Hong-Kong and Japan. Imagineering 2003-2004 - Details at a glance; Organisation Registration from 1 September 2003 until 31 January 2004 Project submission before 30 April 2004 Regional award ceremony at New Designers 2004 (Business Design Centre, London) Participation Individual or within a team (up to 3 members) Selection criteria Creativity - innovation - inclusion of HOME theme and DuPont engineering polymers - manufacturing process - quality of presentation of the project.
