NEW DUPONT™TYVEK® PRODUCT FOR INKJET PRINTING: COMBINING LIGHTNESS, DURABILITY AND PRINT QUALITY
03 February 2003 - DuPont Engineering Polymers

DuPont has expanded its range of DuPont™ Tyvek® spunbonded nonwoven high-density polyethylene (HDPE) products with its new Tyvek®2082D, available in Europe, South Africa, South America and the Middle East.

Specially developed to meet the requirements of the inkjet printing market, it supplies an excellent balance of quality and price/performance, particularly for outdoor applications. Tyvek®2082D creates a visual impact for companies and organisations interested in providing a high-quality image for their messages.

Incorporating a white coating on one side, as well as an exceptional abrasion resistance, Tyvek® 2082D delivers high printability and excellent colour results with both water-based and solvent-based inkjet printing techniques. A further characteristic is its very fast drying time. It provides a high quality solution for both indoor and outdoor applications, such as displays, billboards, posters and promotional materials for stores. Both the coating and the Tyvek® nonwoven sheets are water and weather resistant, as well as tear-resistant.

However, the recyclable Tyvek® 2082D combines lightness with strength resistance – meaning easier handling and fixing, such as sewing, as well as reduced transportation costs.

Tyvek® 2082D is a result of DuPont ongoing scientific and technological research into nonwoven structures. Known around the world for its capability to combine maximum protection with lightness, Tyvek® is used for a wide variety of applications, from mailing envelopes to protective apparel for emergency teams working in hazardous chemical and bacteriological conditions, from medical packaging to outdoor advertising banners, from print media to nautical maps and farming labels. DuPont can also develop sheet structures suited to meet a variety of specific applications.

What is Tyvek® and how is it produced?

DuPont Tyvek® is a flashspun HDPE sheet structure that has introduced new dimensions of protection, security and safety in industries ranging from protective apparel, construction, printing, graphics and packaging.

Tyvek® sheet is formed by a fully integrated process using continuous and very fine (0.5 to 10 micron) fibres of 100 per cent high-density polyethylene which are randomly distributed and non-directional (plexifilaments). These fibres are first flash-spun, then laid as a web on a moving bed before being self-bonded together by heat and pressure without binders, sizers or fillers. By varying both the lay-down speed and the bonding conditions, DuPont technicians can engineer the flashspun sheet to meet specific market needs.

A host of finishing techniques including embossing, corona treatment to improve adhesion of printing inks and coatings, anti-static treatment and softening for more drapability, allow the product to be fine-tuned to the specific needs of customers.
