ROOF AND SUPPORT STRUCTURE IN ONE: HOESCH ARCHED ROOF
11 July 2007 - ThyssenKrupp Steel

The railway station in the Belgian city of Leuven now has a bright new look: a roof made from Hoesch Arched Roof elements not only keeps travelers warm and dry, it also gives the station in the tradition-steeped university city a futuristic touch of high-tech.

ThyssenKrupp Hoesch Bausysteme GmbH supplied around 8,000 square meters of roof elements for this project, part of a 400 million euro-plus modernization program.

The roof over the station’s 16 platforms was erected by Hoesch Contecna Systembau GmbH under difficult conditions. The work could only be carried out at night between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. so as not to disrupt rail services. The first-class structural properties of the Arched Roof elements allow them to span large distances without additional support. The elements used in Leuven station have a span of 14 meters and require no purlins or trusses. If double-shell elements with a heat- or sound-insulating core are used, distances of up to 20 meters can be spanned. This allows building work to progress swiftly.

Hoesch Arched Roof elements are manufactured from hot-dip galvanized trapezoidal profiles. Their good structural properties are based on a special bending process which forms the profiles to the required radii without buckling the material. ThyssenKrupp Hoesch Bausysteme GmbH operates two bending lines at its Scheifling plant in Austria. The elements are available in two profile heights of 41 and 107 millimeters and in five different thicknesses from 0.75 to 1.50 millimeters. ThyssenKrupp Hoesch Bausysteme calculates the most suitable profile heights and material thicknesses for each project. In addition to the hot-dip galvanized coating, customers can choose from a wide range of colors which are applied to the elements by coil coating.

The Hoesch Arched Roof is typically used in industrial and commercial buildings such as exhibition centers or production shops and warehouses. The elements are also a popular choice for sports and leisure centers and for roofing over stands in sports stadiums. One of the best-known references is the terminal of the new airport in Hong Kong, which features some 20,000 square meters of Arched Roof elements. Designed by the British architect Sir Norman Foster, the 1,270 meter terminal is one of the longest buildings in the world. Construction work started recently on Europe’s largest indoor skiing center, for which 48,000 square meters of Hoesch Arched Roof has been ordered.
