FIBERSIM SOFTWARE SELECTED BY TERMA FOR F-35 JOINT STRIKE FIGHTER COMPOSITE PART DESIGN
01 July 2007 - VISTAGY

VISTAGY, Inc., a leading global provider of specialized engineering software, announced that Denmark-based Terma A/S, Grenaa has selected FiberSIM software for the design and manufacture of complex, highly-engineered composite parts for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft.

Terma develops products and systems for a number of civilian and military aircraft in the aerospace industry. Terma has been selected to supply several structural parts for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. These parts will be manufactured using advanced carbon-fiber composite materials, and Terma plans to utilize VISTAGY’s FiberSIM Advanced Composite Engineering Environment, Documentation, and Laser Projection software applications to design and manufacture these composite parts of the aircraft.

“Because of our experience in building military aircraft, Terma saw an important opportunity to work with an engineering software partner to help make our composites design and manufacturing process more efficient for the F-35 project,” said Benny Daugholm, Joint Strike Fighter program manager for Terma. “By utilizing FiberSIM’s advanced design and documentation capabilities as well as its ability to quickly and efficiently export critical design data to laser projection machines, we will reduce overall design costs and delivery time, which is an important goal for our organization.”

The FiberSIM Advanced Composite Engineering Environment is specialized engineering software integrated into existing CAD software systems that provides a flexible and productive environment for digitally defining composite products while automating many of the repetitive design, simulation and manufacturing tasks related to working with composite parts. The ACEE provides significant specialized functionality to the CAD software environment for designing and automating the manufacturing process of the most complex composite products.

Together with the ACEE, FiberSIM Documentation software enables engineers to automatically generate a variety of engineering documents such as material tables, sequence charts and ply lay-up diagrams that can be quickly and easily customized. The FiberSIM Laser Projection software will help Terma automatically generate laser data files from within its CAD software system directly from a 3D model of a composite part. The software will enable Terma engineers to export the data files to advanced laser projection machines that display ply outlines directly on a lay-up tool, thereby reducing errors and shortening lay-up time for composite parts.

“Manufacturers are increasing their use of advanced composite materials for military and commercial aircraft parts, so cutting-edge aerospace manufacturers like Terma are benefiting from model-based digital definitions to make the complex composites design process more efficient,” said Alex Edwards, general manager, Europe, at VISTAGY, Inc. “With FiberSIM software, Terma expects to realize significant reductions in design and lay-up time that will give the company a competitive edge.”

About: VISTAGY
VISTAGY, Inc., is a leading developer of engineering software that enhances commercial 3D CAD systems. VISTAGY’s specialized engineering environments enable engineers to capture and communicate complete digital product definitions within CAD, thereby increasing productivity, improving the communication of product information throughout the product’s lifecycle, and allowing better-informed decision making early in design. VISTAGY software is used throughout the world in the aerospace, automotive, marine, medical, sporting goods, and transportation interiors industries. The company also offers training and consulting services.

FiberSIM is a suite of software that turns major CAD systems into advanced tools for designing and manufacturing composite parts. The software enables engineers to create a complete digital product definition of a composite part within their 3D modeling environment. FiberSIM supports flexible design methodologies for a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes and automatically generates design details all the way from complex ply and zone drop-offs to variable offset surfaces for mock-up and tooling. The software simulates how composite material deforms over complex curvature and generates manufacturing information including documentation, flat patterns, and data to drive downstream manufacturing equipment. FiberSIM also uses XML technology to share composites data with people and applications throughout the enterprise.
