ALCAN SPECIALTY SHEET SUPPORTS EXPANSION OF A USED BEVERAGE CAN COLLECTION IN FRANCE
10 July 2007 - Alcan Inc

Alcan Specialty Sheet has signed a multi-year agreement with Canibal (France), a subsidiary of CFF Recycling, to support deployment of a used beverage can collection network in France.

"Alcan Specialty Sheet is building a strong continental position in UBC recovery and processing together with its customers, to further underscore aluminum as the material of choice for beverage cans," said Christophe Villemin, President Alcan Specialty Sheet. "This agreement will further promote the collection and recycling of UBCs, and foster the development of UBC collecting systems in France," he added.

The partnership aims to significantly expand the current network of UBC collecting equipment in targeted locations in France. Alcan Specialty Sheet has committed to recycle all the Canibal-collected UBCs at the Company’s Neuf-Brisach plant.

Alcan recently announced that it will invest US$7 million in its Specialty Sheet Rolling and Recycling plant at Neuf-Brisach, France, to recycle used aluminium beverage cans. The new capacity is scheduled to come on stream by the beginning of 2008. Recycling aluminum requires about five percent of the energy needed to produce it from virgin materials, and saves 95 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions.

"France’s current overall UBC recycling rate is approximately 18 percent compared to a 50 percent rate for all of Europe. This partnership is an important vehicle to improving the consumer mindset towards UBC collecting in France," said Jean-Baptiste Lucas, Sales and Marketing Director, Alcan Canstock and Closures.

Canibal (www.canibal.fr), was created in 2001, and acquired last year by CFF Recycling. Canibal’s objective is to promote environmental-friendly behaviors and offer communication and advertising support to recycling. It operates a network of collection bins, which randomly distribute gifts to people returning cans. Canibal received a "sustainable development" label from the French Ministry for Environment. Canibal is looking to expand its network in France and install new machines at highways gas stations and in main French universities campuses. CCF Recycling utilizes Canibal as a fun means to support environmental protection by collecting and giving new value to end-of-life-cycle consumer goods.

Alcan Specialty Sheet is a key player in the European rolling industry, and occupies leading market positions for beverage cans and closures, automotive, customized industrial sheet solutions, and high quality bright surface products for lighting reflectors, cosmetics, decoration and solar energy markets. It includes world-class rolling and recycling operations in Neuf-Brisach (France) and Singen (Germany), as well as dedicated R&D capabilities in Voreppe (France) and Neuhausen (Switzerland). Alcan Specialty Sheet employs 2,400 people.
