DREW MARINE SAFETY’S LABORATORY NOW ABS CERTIFIED TO ANALYZE FIRE-FIGHTING FOAM CONCENTRATES
28 July 2007 - Ashland Inc

An approval to analyze fire-fighting foam concentrates was recently granted to Drew Marine Safety’s laboratory by the American Bureau of Shipping. Drew Marine is a business group of Ashland Water Technologies, a division of Ashland Inc.

Drew Marine Safety is now recognized as a certified external specialist to test the physical properties of fire-fighting foam concentrates used on-board marine and offshore vessels. To date, it is the only laboratory granted this distinction by ABS.

As a recognized leader in the analysis of many types of marine deposits and water samples, Drew Marine’s water technology laboratory demonstrated the expertise to properly analyze fire-fighting foam samples. The fire-fighting foam concentrate, stored in bulk containers, is subject to many factors that can affect its performance and life expectancy. In order to ensure that foam will perform as needed, international regulations require annual testing.

In order to receive external specialist approval, Drew Marine’s laboratory presented its quality management system and laboratory operating procedures for ABS approval. The lab also performed a practical demonstration of its analysis methods and reporting.

“In addition to the International Maritime Organization’s Maritime Safety Committee guidelines to test samples for the required five physical properties, we also perform additional testing such as alcohol resistance, refractive index, and sediment particulate analysis under the same program. This exceeds the requirements and what is typically reported by labs and assures a more complete evaluation of the foam,” says William Gielen, business manager of Drew Marine Safety.

Drew Marine’s laboratory analyzes samples sent from anywhere in the world. “We alleviate the burden of locating a reputable laboratory. Our foam analysis kit includes bottles, sampling instructions , and international pre-paid shipping to our lab. Most samples are analyzed the day they are received, and results are sent electronically within 48 hours of receipt in our lab,” says Karen Bourneuf, foam analysis program manager.
