BAYER MATERIALSCIENCE STARTS NEW COMMUNICATIONS CAMPAIGN

The evolution from a raw materials supplier to a project and development partner has long been an integral part of Bayer MaterialScience AG and is reflected not least in the recently opened TechniKomm. The new facilities provide a bright and friendly environment where design plans can be discussed with customers and where creative product ideas can be conceived.

In their speeches at the official opening of the TechniKomm, Dr. Günter Hilken, head of the Polycarbonates Business Unit, and Dr. Tim Bielfeldt, head of the Thermoplastic Polyurethanes Business Unit , stressed that activities at Bayer MaterialScience are no longer restricted to simply providing granules, films and sheets. Technical consulting coupled with collaborative development and implementation are key to finding the right solution for each application.

Against this backdrop, Bayer MaterialScience came up with the slogan ”The Makrolon Effect” for the PCS Business Unit, as it neatly sums up the company’s customer-focused approach. Wolfgang Mühlen, team manager for advertising at PCS / TPU and the brains behind the advertising campaign, explains – ”I have been working with the PCS Business Unit and handling advertising for Makrolon for over a decade now, and even I am constantly surprised by the never-ending growth in potential applications for our polycarbonate. This is only possible because our materials specialists always work closely with customers, building up a detailed picture of all their requirements for raw materials and beyond. When a designer chooses Makrolon from Bayer MaterialScience, he isn’t just buying what might seem to be a batch of unremarkable granules, he is gaining access to a unique service and skills package,that is, the Makrolon Effect.” And even this added extra is customized to the specific applications at hand. Whereas, in the case of optical data storage, perhaps a single permanent team of experts can achieve technological advances, medical equipment developers depend on interdisciplinary consultation, including specialist medical know-how. In electrical engineering and electronics, ongoing developments in mold technology constantly recreate a new basis for innovative design, for example in the production of flat screen monitors.

Comprehensive service and support package
It is only possible to achieve optimized plastic components and assemblies if certain design principles are taken into account. These include the complex interactions encountered in the processing operations for e.g. injection molding, extruding, blow molding and thermoforming. This is where the comprehensive service and support package of Bayer MaterialScience AG comes in. The plastics engineers and material scientists in the Polycarbonates and Thermoplastic Polyurethanes Business Units are on hand to lend support to customers from the initial idea for a molded part through to its design and the start of production. Taking concept ideas as a starting point, solutions are drafted and illustrated, details are hammered out and then all this is implemented in a design suitable for plastics. Commercial CAE software for mechanical and rheological component design and software tools based on neuronal networks and specially developed by Bayer MaterialScience form an important basis for the efficient and practical selection of materials. They make it possible to illustrate stress-strain curves, material shrinkage, flow behavior and many other characteristics of Makrolon and its blends as a function of processing and load parameters. A Bayer MaterialScience project team also offers the benefit of many years’ experience in the field of mold design for polycarbonates. This ensures that molded plastic parts are produced in precisely the right dimensions and with exactly the characteristics they require. Following successful completion of the design engineering phase, processing experts provide support for the actual manufacturing of the plastic part. In addition to processing know-how, customers also have access to process optimization systems and thermal analyses. The package of consulting services at Bayer MaterialScience also encompasses silo concepts for materials transport, the design of driers and specialist know-how in injection molding machines – including handling and quality control. If the surfaces of molded parts have to be treated after injection molding, for example painted or electroplated, Bayer MaterialScience also has specialists who work exclusively in this area. Olaf Zöllner from the Polycarbonates Business Unit: ”As well as providing direct project support, we also develop new applications and processing technologies with our customers, or try to improve existing processes. We can also prove or run-in customers’ molds at our Injection Molding Technical Service Center, where injection molding is carried out under production-like conditions.” The accredited Thermoplastics Testing Center is available to all business units wishing to conduct testing. As well as offering around 200 different types of test for plastics, it also enables the production of test pieces. The Color Competence Centers operated by the Leverkusen-based raw materials supplier in all key commercial regions also offer customers access to color matches and pigmented granule samples in small amounts for initial sampling tests. Bayer MaterialScience offers a comprehensive portfolio of colors and special effects under the fitting brand name Fantasia, which bring together five basic technologies for the coloring and surface design of plastics.
