HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL HOUSING FOR PROFESSIONAL LIGHT CONSOLES
14 August 2007 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

The Maxxyz model from Danish firm Martin Professional is a professional light console that provides programmers and light designers with many different options for creating the perfect show. The housing is made by Dupont plastic ApS from the flame-retardant polyurethane integral skin foam Baydur 110 FR from Bayer MaterialScience, supplied by BaySystems BÜFA.

Light effects play an increasingly important role in live concerts and stage shows. Today’s event organizers have a whole range of tricks in their toolbox, from spotlights and floodlights to fading and effective synchronization with sound or video, all of which can be used with light shows to create a particular mood or atmosphere. And of course, high standards are expected of the hardware and software that control these various lighting effects. The Maxxyz and Maxxyz Wing models from Danish firm Martin Professional A/S, Arhus, are two professional light consoles that provide programmers and light designers with many different options for creating the perfect show. The housing for these models is made by Dupont plastic ApS in Hjortshoj, Denmark, from the flame-retardant polyurethane integral skin foam Baydur 110 FR from Bayer MaterialScience AG, supplied by BaySystems BÜFA GmbH & Co., Oldenburg. This material offers exceptional freedom in terms of design, meets all the functional requirements of the parts it is used to make, and can also be processed cost-effectively in the small and medium batches typical to this kind of application.

Dupont plastic manufactures two parts measuring 30 x 100 centimeters for the Maxxyz. These parts surround the two monitors in the console and are manufactured in the same mold. Two other parts of the housing, each measuring 40 x 26 centimeters, are provided with holes to accommodate most of the controls. These components, plus two bars, are also manufactured in a single mold. “The material had to be highly functional because, in addition to the holes for the controls, the parts also feature several other details such as the inclusion of a trackball and the screw thread for mounting on the metal chassis. This requires extreme precision,” says Harddy Dupont, managing director of Dupont plastic.

Another characteristic of the polyurethane material is its excellent inherent stiffness and strength, which are even evident at a thickness of just 2 or 3 millimeters, the kind of dimensions used for making the parts for the Maxxyz. In addition, the black-pigmented Baydur 110 FR components also have a high-quality surface that is given an additional stylish, soft-feel polyurethane coating for both models. With their unique functions, including three-dimensional visualizer, USB and motorized faders, and the professional-look user interface, these two light consoles are among the most sophisticated currently on the market.
