ASHLAND INTRODUCES PATHGUARD™ PATHOGEN CONTROL SYSTEM TO FIGHT FOODBORNE PATHOGENS
26 January 2005 - Ashland Inc

Ashland Specialty Chemical, a division of Ashland Inc., announces that it has been granted conditional approval of its PathGuard pathogen control system by the United States Department of Agriculture after successfully completing protocol testing.

Ashland has demonstrated that the PathGuard pathogen control system can significantly reduce levels of pathogens including Salmonella and E. Coli in poultry processing by combining Ashland's expertise in chlorine dioxide generation and state-of-the-art control technology.

Over the past three years, Ashland has developed a system to safely and effectively use chlorine dioxide in online reprocessing and chiller treatments. This allows poultry processors to benefit from the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide to reduce pathogens, while maintaining plant safety through equipment monitoring, control and data recording. Additional benefits of this technology are extremely low water use and the ability to further reduce pathogens in other areas within a processing plant through water reuse.

This breakthrough in pathogen control technology is an added tool for poultry processors to use to protect against pathogens in food. 'Ashland is committed to partnering with food processors to provide the most effective means possible to improve the safety of America's food supply,' said Dale Jenson, vice president Americas for Ashland's Drew Industrial business.
