ASHLAND INTRODUCES BREAKTHROUGH SONOXIDE™ WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM
06 December 2004 - Ashland Inc

Ashland Specialty Chemical, a division of Ashland Inc., announces commercialization of its patented SONOXIDE water treatment system, a breakthrough in the effective technologies that are available for treating bacteria, algae and biofilm in industrial water systems.

The vast majority of industrial water treatment systems use chemical microbiocides. The SONOXIDE system uses advanced non-chemical technology to control microbial growth with none of the issues associated with the use of chemical microbiocides. Like traditional biocides, the SONOXIDE system provides effective microbiological control throughout the entire water system.

SONOXIDE systems have been performance tested in a wide variety of applications ranging from cooling tower systems to direct contact process water systems. The technology is directly applicable to the majority of industrial systems currently utilizing chemical biocides.

According to Len Gelosa, senior vice president, Water Technologies, Ashland Specialty Chemical, 'Ashland's SONOXIDE system is revolutionary technology that delivers opportunities for major improvement in microbial control in an environmentally considerate fashion, without worker safety issues.

By incorporating both chemical and non-chemical technologies within our water treatment programs, Ashland provides customers with new options in environmental management while maintaining both technical and cost performance.'

The SONOXIDE system, typically used in conjunction with Ashland's award-winning ENVIROPLUS™ scale and corrosion control technology, is a self-contained equipment package that is easily installed and functions without operator interaction during routine use. Water passes through the SONOXIDE chamber, where bacterial cells are exposed to low-power, high-frequency ultrasonic energy. This energy causes a series of fatal alterations within bacterial and algae cells, resulting in cell death.

SONOXIDE systems have been installed in more than 100 locations throughout Europe and North America, providing significant economic and environmental benefits to Ashland customers.
