GE TRANSPORTATION JOINS EPA 'CLIMATE LEADERS' PROGRAM
04 April 2006 - AZDEL

GE Transportation announced today that it is joining the Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders program, an initiative that targets greenhouse gas emission reduction among leading corporations.

GE Transportation is committing to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions 25% between 2003 and 2008. Progress toward this goal will be measured on a revenue-normalized basis.

GE Transportation anticipates emission reductions from all of its sites, both global and domestic. GE's rail facility here will lead the way by transitioning its powerhouse from coal to other fuels that produce less greenhouse gas emissions.

"GE Transportation is pleased to be a part of a program aimed at addressing matters affecting the global environment," said Steve Ramsey, GE Vice President of Environmental Programs. "We see our participation in the EPA's voluntary Climate Leaders initiative as an opportunity to underscore GE's commitment to improving the environment through our products and processes."

In addition to the greenhouse gas emissions reduction, GE Transportation also has been working to develop products that are more fuel-efficient and that emit less polluting gasses.

GE will begin commercial production of the Evolution Series locomotive, the cleanest diesel-electric locomotive ever made. Evolution locomotives cut NOX emissions by 40%, while at the same time increasing fuel efficiency by up to 5%.

GE Transportation began manufacturing gearbox assemblies for GE Energy's wind turbine business. GE Transportation began designing the gearboxes based on its expertise in designing gear systems for the off-highway vehicle industry.

GE Transportation is now one of 60 corporations who have partnered with the EPA through Climate Leaders. Companies such as General Motors, Eastman Kodak and Johnson and Johnson are among other leading partners.

"EPA applauds GE Transportation for its leadership. GE Transportation is one of a select group of companies that have become Climate Leaders and announced an aggressive greenhouse gas reduction target," according to Kathleen Hogan, Director, EPA's Climate Protection Partnerships Division. "These commitments will make a significant contribution to achieving the President's climate protection goal."

Climate Leaders was established in 2002 as a voluntary program that works with companies to measure greenhouse gas emissions and set aggressive, long-term emissions reduction goals.
