Project officials from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and APAC-Atlantic, Inc. are completing sections of the project area to give motorists access to the full interchanges at Route 60, Route 711 (Robious Road), and the new bridge over the James River. Weather permitting, the seven-mile segment is slated for completion in late August. This segment connects to previously opened portions of Route 288 between Route 6 and Interstate 64 in Goochland County. Once this segment is open, motorists will be able to drive Route 288 from Midlothian Turnpike to I-64 in approximately 12 minutes. This is a significant timesavings over the other available river crossings including Chippenham Parkway's Willey Bridge and Huguenot Bridge. 'We had originally not planned on opening Route 288 in any more sections until the entire project was completed this fall, primarily to ensure that the new segments of Route 288 safely fed into roadways that could handle the increased traffic volume,' said Thomas A. Hawthorne, P.E., VDOT's Richmond district administrator. 'However, we have concentrated efforts to speed the completion of the Route 60 interchange. It makes sense to allow motorists to start using this new highway as soon as it is safely possible to do so.' With the heavy earthwork behind them, construction crews are focusing on completing the paving and the final safety items, such as signage, lighting and guardrail, before the highway can open to full traffic. 'We have made excellent progress this summer and that's allowing us to open this section of the new highway several weeks earlier than expected,' said APAC Project Manager Sheldon Eskelson. He adds 'This section is significant for commuters because it includes the new James River bridge.'
