The Valvoline Company's Cincinnati plant mechanics Kenneth (Joe) Jones and Barry Grainger were issued the patent for their design and invention of the 'Bottle Alignment Packaging Apparatus,' also known as bottle turners for the Douglas casepackers. 'This is a 'first' for Valvoline operations, and a significant milestone,' said Jack Kelliher, vice president, Valvoline lube manufacturing. 'This invention has revolutionized our production lines.' Previously, as bottles came down the line, they had to be turned before they were inserted into cases and under the old method, they frequently tipped over, causing the line to stop. The new alignment process automatically grabs the bottle, turns and releases it into the case, and tipping rarely occurs. 'Bottle handling efficiency has improved dramatically on the line,' said Steve Ruble, senior packaging engineer. 'We are now packing 100 to 200 cases more per hour.' 'I'm pleased to recognize these individuals for identifying problems and finding solutions for them,' said James V. Rocco, Valvoline's senior vice president, operations.
