ASHLAND INTRODUCES NEW GEL COAT AND CAST POLYMER RESIN FOR CULTURED MARBLE AND ONYX
19 February 2004 - Ashland Inc

Ashland Composite Polymers introduces MAXGUARD® CG-40-0009 marble clear gel coat and POLARIS® MR 84330-16 resin for cultured marble and onyx to its line of cultured marble fabrication resins.

Containing only 40% HAP, the MAXGUARD CG-40-0009 gel coat is compliant with California's Rule 1162 and provides emission reductions and performance improvements for users throughout North America. Developed for use in an autocaster, the POLARIS MR 84330-16 resin develops green strength quickly and allows parts to be demolded quickly.

Formulated with a proprietary polymer designed to surpass the existing NPG/IPA chemistry, the new MAXGUARD gel coat formulation exceeded 3000 cycles during the ANSI thermoshock test for cultured marble. The product also exhibits excellent color clarity when first sprayed, allows production-quality parts to be sprayed with non-atomized equipment, and reduces in-box yellowing.

'By supplying both resins and gel coats, Ashland provides its marble and onyx customers with the convenience and technical information sharing that comes with a single supplier,' says Dianne Coon, industry manager for marble and solid surface, Composite Polymers. She adds, 'Ashland can proactively work with manufacturers to optimize their entire cast marble, onyx or solid surface fabrication process.'

Existing gel coats in the MAXGUARD premium gel coat line include the MAXGUARD CG-44 marble clear gel coat series for cultured marble and onyx at 44% HAP and the MAXGUARD CG-42 sprayable granite series. The new MAXGUARD CG-40-0009 marble clear gel coat for cultured marble and onyx applications is currently used in commercial applications at multiple manufacturers.

In addition to the new POLARIS MR 84330-16 resin, Ashland Composite Polymers markets a full line of POLARIS cast polymer resins to the marble, onyx, and solid surface industries. The POLARIS resin line is designed to handle normal variations between manufacturers in such parameters as batch or autocaster processing, gel times, and regional reactivity.
