ASHLAND'S HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION SUBSIDIARY IS LOW BIDDER ON $100-MILLION-PLUS NORTH CAROLINA DOT PROJECT
21 July 2003 - Ashland Inc

APAC-Atlantic, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Ashland Inc., was the low bidder on a $101.5-million project in the July 15 North Carolina Department of Transportation bid letting.

The project is located in Guilford County, Greensboro, N. C., and includes a four-mile stretch of the Greensboro urban outer loop that intersects with Interstate 40. The announcement was made by Charles F. Potts, president of APAC, Inc., and senior vice president of Ashland Inc.

APAC's Thompson-Arthur Division, located in Greensboro, N.C., will be the primary contractor on the four-year project, which has a combination of asphalt and concrete surfaces, and includes the construction of 23 bridges and all underground utilities. APAC's Ballenger Paving Division, located in Taylors, S.C., will handle all of the concrete paving, while 10 percent of the project will be constructed by minority contractors in keeping with the project's disadvantaged enterprise goals.

The final project award from the North Carolina Department of Transportation is expected to take place on August 7. Work on the project should begin August 25.

APAC is the nation's leading provider of publicly funded highway construction services. Operating in 14 Southern and Midwestern states, the company's assets include 36 quarries, 61 aggregate production facilities, 67 ready-mix concrete plants, 242 hot-mix asphalt plants and more than 16,500 pieces of mobile equipment.
