ASHLAND INC. CHAIRMAN JOINS AMERICAN CHEMISTRY COUNCIL BOARD

| Ashland Inc. chairman and chief executive officer James J. O’Brien has been elected to serve on the American Chemistry Council (ACC) board of directors. His term will expire Dec. 31, 2004.

O’Brien will serve on the ACC’s Responsible Care® and Political Activity Committees. O’Brien will leverage his participation within ACC to hone Ashland’s concerted company-wide focus on Responsible Care programs and initiatives. The ACC, headquartered in Arlington, Va., represents leading companies engaged in the business of chemistry. ACC members apply the science of chemistry to make innovative products and services, making people’s lives better, healthier and safer. The ACC board’s Responsible Care committee focuses on environmental, health and safety performance improvement initiatives for members, while the board’s political activity committee coordinates political outreach activities, including voter participation programs. ACC is committed to improving environmental, health and safety performance through Responsible Care, a common sense advocacy designed to address major public policy issues, health research, environmental research, and product testing. Founded in 1988, the program has resulted in significant reductions in releases to air, land and water, major improvements in workplace and community safety, and expanded programs to research and test chemicals for potential health and environmental impacts.
