“Over the past 32 years, Jim has successfully led our specialty chemical business to significant expansion and growth through a range of challenging economic environments. His substantial contributions to this important line of business have strengthened and positioned it for future success. I’m confident that Ashland Specialty Chemical’s management team will continue the new momentum generated under Jim’s leadership this past year,” said O’Brien. Ashland Specialty Chemical reported operating income of $87 million for the 2002 fiscal year, a 50 percent increase compared to 2001’s results. On a line of business basis, results improved for the year from performance materials (unsaturated polyester resins, foundry chemicals and adhesives) and water treatment. In addition, the performance of electronic chemicals improved. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Duquin earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Niagara University. One year later, in 1970, he joined the HETRON® polyester resin product group of Occidental Chemical. He joined Ashland in 1976 after the company acquired the polyester resin product line from Occidental. Early in his career he worked in a broad range of management positions in the unsaturated polyester resin business. In 1985 he was named vice president and general manager of the Electronic Chemicals Division, became vice president and general manager of the fiberglass reinforced plastics supply division in 1990 and in 1992 was named vice president of distribution services. In 1995 he was appointed vice president and general manager of the industrial chemicals and solvents division. He was named group vice president of specialty chemicals in 1997, and in March, 1999 was promoted to president of Ashland Specialty Chemical Company. Duquin has completed executive development programs from The Ohio State University and Indiana State University, and the Advanced Management Program of Harvard University’s School of Business. He is a member of the Ohio Business Roundtable and serves on the Board of Trustees for the Columbus Council on World Affairs.
