PRESTIGIOUS SCREEN PRINTING HONOUR FOR AUTOTYPE’S EMPLOYEE
14 November 2002 - Autotype International
| Bill Appleton, a consultant screen printer with Autotype International Ltd - one of Europe's leading manufacturers of screen printing products - has been awarded the Harold Schneider & SPA Award for Outstanding Innovation and Service to the Screen Printing Industry, at a ceremony held during the annual West of England Screen Printing Association (SPA) dinner dance. |
Mike Turner, Director of the Screen Printing Association, who relished the opportunity of saluting and surprising his contemporary, introduced the award. ‘The task that I am about to undertake gives me enormous pleasure - not least of which is the fact that the subject of the task knows nothing about it.’ He continued by thanking Appleton for ‘the incredible work and enthusiasm he has put in to both the SPA and the screen process itself’. Presently working at Wantage-based Autotype, Bill Appleton has enjoyed nearly 46 years in the printing industry, during which he has been chairman of the SPA’s South West Branch, has had numerous papers published and was responsible for establishing a number of industry standards, including the four-colour process ISO. Following the award ceremony, Appleton said: ‘In the 20 years that my wife has known me, this was the first time I was completely speechless, it was absolutely unexpected and I am very touched to be recognised in this way.’ At Autotype, Appleton is heavily involved in the company’s research and technology department where he has provided several years of commitment to developing the science behind screen printing. The fruits of his labour have helped Autotype develop a range of market-leading screen products, including the revolutionary new Capillex photostencil films - which are rapidly becoming the industry standard for high quality screen printing. The SPA award was established in 1933 and was subsequently dedicated to the memory of Harold Schneider, one of the original founders of the SPA’s magazine Screen Process. Appleton’s award is the fifteenth to be made in the history of the memorial honour.
