Castings Technology International (Cti) has recently had the skills of its staff and the quality of its work further endorsed by achieving accreditation by the Environment Agency's Monitoring Certification Scheme (MCERTS) for manual stack emission monitoring. By Certifying only those organisations with suitable equipment, competent personnel and organised management systems, the MCERTS scheme sets a standard for the quality of data from environmental monitoring operations. Cti's monitoring team passed a series of demanding exams, leading to their certification of competence for the services that Cti has provided to customers over many years. Members of the team hold Technical Endorsements for particulate monitoring, multi-phase sampling of trace pollutants, and manual and instrumental sampling of gases/vapours. In addition to the certification of the staff, Cti underwent an extensive UKAS audit to attain the organisation's accreditation to MCERTS for a wide range of stack emissions tests. With this accreditation comes the ability to provide customers with the confidence that the services they receive from Cti are second to none. Monitoring carried out by an organisation not holding the MCERTS accreditation could lead to extra tests being required by the Environment Agency or Local Authority to ensure compliance with emission limits. Using an accredited service provider therefore has the potential to bring a significant benefit in terms of monitoring costs. This adds to the ISO 14001 certification for Environmental Management Systems awarded to Cti in 2004 following the training of personnel, verification that the company conformed to current environmental legislation, monitoring of waste levels and energy consumption and introduction of waste and energy consumption reduction measures. The Environmental Management Committee set up by Cti constantly monitors, measures and reviews the company's performance in these areas. By achieving ISO 14001 and maintaining the required standards, Cti is gaining valuable hands-on experience in working with this quality standard, and is well placed to provide advice to other companies wishing to implement the standard in their business practices.
