EXCEPTIONAL PIGMENTED INK DISPLAYS WITH NEW AUTOTYPE SIGMAGRAF PLUS
16 May 2000 - Autotype International

Autotype International Ltd has introduced new pigmented versions of its proven display graphic solutions, SIGMA and SIGMAGraF. The new ‘Plus’ substrates have been developed to increase the options for display graphics production as the new films are specially designed for use with pigmented inks.

These inks are widely used for producing displays where prolonged exposure to sunlight is likely, as pigmented inks are far more colour stable than traditional inks.

SIGMAGraF Plus is already being used commercially at a display house in West Yorkshire called Fresco PictureWall, for the production of a range of vibrant, large format displays. The use of SIGMAGraF Plus is enabling Fresco PictureWall to produce displays that have ultra sharp definition and are fade resistant.

Fresco PictureWall is using the new Autotype substrate for producing a wide range of portable displays, graphic panels, banners and window displays including magnetic vehicle graphics for BT and signs for a butterfly house. Fresco is involved in a wide range of projects and has, for instance, just won a major new order to produce displays for the promotion of Pokemon in the UK.

In order to produce its large format images, the company has a Mimaki JV2-130 inkjet printer. The required image is simply reverse printed onto the SIGMAGraF Plus substrate, with the type of backing used depending on the requirements of the display.

Prior to using Autotype’s SIGMAGraF Plus, Fresco PictureWall used encapsulated paper for its displays. Fresco were however always concerned about the tendency for paper to split at the edge resulting in delamination.

As SIGMAGraF Plus is reverse printed with the image, it both guarantees clarity and sharpness of image and produces a display that has a fully protected, cleanable surface. In addition, it prints easily and reliably and as it is paper-free, does not suffer from edge delamination. Furthermore, SIGMAGraF Plus is extremely versatile and can be used in a wide range of displays, even where a degree of waterproof or UV protection is required, such as window displays.

Miles Harris, Managing Director of Fresco PictureWall Ltd explains, “We have been heavily involved in trials with the new SIGMAGraF Plus substrate and we are now using it commercially for a wide range of displays. Prior to using the Autotype product, we tested a number of competing products that were designed for use with pigmented inks but none of the products we tested met with our requirements. Based on the various trials we have carried out, we firmly believe that SIGMAGraF is the best product of its type on the market.”
